Z4M Steering wheel inserts peeling

What are my options for the steering wheel inserts (the plastic bits on the arms) peeling off? It looks like there is nice shiny black plastic underneath the "soft" coating that comes off.

Sit there for hours and using your nails peel of the whole thing!

But seriously, I have heard of a member who used plastidip. Might want to give that a try

Unless I'm looking at the wrong thing, RealOEM suggests it is part #32348035326, and they are $200:

Doesn't exactly seem "pretty cheap" to me, especially if it is going to happen again.

+1 on plastidip or any spray paint

OEM replacements are expensive and will result in the same fate over time.

Although I may actually retrofit the non-M silver trim like this

That was what all the dots were for.....

You can also look into getting the silver ones for the non M cars. Seem to be much more durable.

Thanks guys. I may try to pop them off and sand/spray them. I've also seen some nice "carbon fiber" 3M film that I think would look great, but may be a bitch trying to apply.

I've read that this is doable without removing the steering wheel, I will try to give that a go. I replaced the steering wheel on my E46 330i a few years ago; relatively easy, but would prefer to avoid it if possible; unless someone chimes in to the contrary.

Plasti-dipped mine!

Very close to OEM, maybe 90% - 95%. In fact, I only did one side and you can't really notice any difference at all.

Very easy to take off and redo if they do start peeling.

My only advice is to use a new can of Plastidip for the final coat since if the can is low, air bubbles start to come out.

Could you post pictures of your plastidipped trim?

I'm very happy I went with the silver trim, versus replacing the peeling ones with new rubber coated ones, that would just peel in time like the first set. They look good and are much more durable to sweat/persperation and body oils than the rubber coated ones

I haven't got around to doing anything about this, I kind of stopped noticing it .... I may take them off when I store my car for the winter and do something then.

antennahead; where did you get the silver ones? I don't think I want to invest too much in this fix.

Can anyone confirm if it is possible to remove the trim pieces (sides+bottom) without taking off the whole wheel?

Any pics? If it looks good it might be a good permanent solution.

BMW Partz Direct (BMW of North Haven). $215. Part # 65-71-0-304-942
This includes the radio/bluetooth controls, so I think that is why it's a little more expensive that just the spokes.

Sides come off very easy and is an easy replacement. The bottom spokes come off easy enough, but can be a bit tricky to replace. I was able to replace mine without removing the wheel or the airbag section. I will admit the back piece of the bottom spoke was a bear to get on. You have to work the top of it under the airbag trim and twist it a bit. It can be done however. If you look closely also, the front of the bottom piece is longer than the rubber coated one, and extends further down on the wheel. I am fine with that. I think it looks good and accents the brushed aluminum trim well. The actual color of this trim is called "graphite", as opposed to the "chrome" versions. I like the graphite better. It matches the door handles well and is slightly less shiny. I also replaced my roll bar covers with the silver grey ones, which are pretty much a perfect match also.

After the coating wore off and after numerous paint coverings wore off, then after a set of rather cheap looking 'graphite' covers, i decided to CF mine... see pics below, expensive but now i LOVE looking at the wheel!

Wow that looks good! Is your dash real carbon fiber too? I figure I probably won't even ask what that cost.

Thanks guys, yes the dash, console, rear console, door handles, elec window switches, sills, corner sills etc etc are all real carbon fibre, (cf laminated with 2x2 weave) the steering wheel is a little expensive but then so are those damn switch surrounds! I'm thinking I need to post more pics showing the other CF parts I've got done?!

Styling and color are rather subjective, but I don't think the graphite spokes are cheap looking.
