Given the above and the idea that imo BMW would have applied at least some math to the design of their intake (for instance it sits in a low pressure area of the front end) which would be needed to supply an S54 with enough air, and that we know this intake is also able to supply more than enough air to a supercharged s54 which will need more than any NA version I think I'll drop out of this conversation here

Best of luck with your project, I hope it works out well for you.

Those are actually pretty cool, induction resonance optimised intakes. If you can tune the resonant frequency of the intake to peak as you hit max power you can increase the volumetric efficiency. These are good on a race car as they generally tune the intake runner for operation around in the smaller rev range that it will be working in, for a road car it is less than ideal as outside of this range the resonance will have negative effects on efficiency. If they have some way on this to vary the runner length that would be really really cool, I don't know, but that would definitely need a pretty fancy ecu.

Lol mate, they are not air intakes, but direct exhausts for the radiator. Maybe you should be typing nfi a bit more too if you think those exhaust are air intakes.

Still would be great if you could post up the bottom end of your snorkel so we can see how large it is compared to the actual flap snorkel.

Anyways, it's ok to have different opinions, that's what makes us all unique, and how we find out different ways to do things. It's all good Tom, nothing personal implied mate. I just wanna see if we let this intake breathe better if we can up the performance a bit. Would probably require extra fueling and adjusted maps, but hey, can't hurt to try.

Lol too, you're probably right. My first thought was that they were acting as some kind of s-duct helping flow attach to the car by ducting air from the floor, but reading the specs of the car it notes a "Carbon fibre airbox with resonance induction optimised inlet pipes", that got my mind twiddling (it uses a helmholtz resonator design which can have similar shapes) . Any better pictures of the intake mouth out there? Either way it looks pretty badass!
Listen, I'm not saying that you are wrong (I don't have the knowledge to calculate it), it's indeed possible you might be right, but without any analysis on the system how can you be so certain about the statements you make?

Your right Tom, I can't mate, but seeing as most S54 NA race cars with our intakes seem to have huge intake frontal area, must be for a reason. Either way, no harm done.
Gonna give it a go, if it works, great, if it doesn't, nothing lost.

This is how the Karbonious looks like with the trimmed snorkel. A more elegant solution is needed. I wrote Karbonious if they are working on a Z4M specific snorkel, we'll see what happens.

I am not sure if I can feel any difference in mine after full exhaust, CSL intake and Alpha N tune. Seems a but too loud with the Stromung mufflers and Rogue X pipe but I still have some adjustment to make. X Pipe is/was rubbing on one of the braces.

It'll be interesting.

Guys I can see we are a lot of us with the need for the Karbonius snorkel. Maybe it is time to go for a group buy? And also start thinking of the best solution how this snorkel should be designed?

Before 20 days and more I have send them detailed measurements from my car about the snorkel, but I have no news to hear back from them.

This picture shows exactly what I was trying to say in the above posts. That oem inlet is tiny. I hope Karbonious are not just looking to straight connect it to that inlet?

Rob Turner asking on that Facebook page is me by the way

If we ever set up a group buy I'm definitely interested.

@Vanne, nothing a bit of C4 or a grinder with a giant cutting wheel can't fix eh !! But it is an interesting point.

Yeah, I'd be REALLY interested in this setup. If there's some sort of GB, not sure I'd be able to contain myself as my whole intake is still all stock. My E30 M3 had racing intake box on it........ pure sexy!!

Not apples to apples, but just came across this video which highlights temperature differences between intakes positioned under the hood and ones potentially pulling air from the front of the car:

I got a reply from Karbonious but no time frame at the moment. Just a project. Wrote back if they would like to get deposits of interested people. Will let you know how it goes.

I suppose going on their Facebook page and posting a comment or just sending them email wouldn't be a bad idea.

How many people have the CSL box from Karbonious?

Hi Rob, good to see you in the forum(I am Georgi Baltov, right below you) Setting up a group buy is the easy part. I remember the Ohlins group buy attempt and then nothing happened. I would really hate getting my hopes up for nothing.

Although I think Karbonoius will do it. I just hope we don't wait forever that's all.

Vanne, although my car is a non M the front end sheet metal is the same except for the hood latch mechanism.
My solution to feed more air for my SC was to fabricate a 3.5” duct system using household PVC plumbing pipe.
There was a bit of modification required to the front end sheet metal as noted in the diagram by the blue lines, This area was cut and removed. Then that area was sandwiched with an inner and outer 10gauge(1/8”) thick steel plates and bolted through to regain integrity in that area. Not sure it was needed for integrity but the plates also created a smooth and visually appealing location for the ductwork to pass through. Finally a K&N filter fits nicely behind the kidney grille.
In the case of the snorkel you guys are looking at,a silicone connector may be utilized to join the CF snorkel to the duct.

Certainly more important than worrying about increasing the size of the intake hole by an inch or so. Just my 2c.
As I'm not sure if that's possible I have concentrated on what I know to be important for getting alpha-n to work well which is to have a good supply of cold air and making sure the IAT probe reports this air temperature accurately (i.e. not suffering from any heatsoak to give false readings for the table).
I look forward to seeing your headlight/carbon tube mod and the results you see from it...
While I don't think it's impossible to hack the MSS70 to run a MAP sensor, I don't think it's really necessary. MSS70 should be able to do alpha-n much more reliably than the MSS54 in the M3 if tuned properly. A big factor in that is the fact that the Z4M uses wideband O2 sensors unlike the M3.

Hi guys,

could you go Karbonious' facebook page and bug them about that snorkel. I just did but got a sad face reply. We need to keep expressing interest to hopefully get them to do it.

Thanks
