Hood slammed into windshield

Just had the hood pop open and slam into my windshield while going 55 mph. So much for having a safety latch. Didn't seem to work.

Shopping for a replacement hood now. I know the hood latch design changed to a dual latch setup in 2006. Mine is a single latch style from 2004. Anyone know if I can use a later model hood?

I know some have put Z4M hoods on their regular Z4s. I'm not interested in doing that, but if it's been done to an early Z4, I guess they are interchangeable.

Thanks,
Rob

About 2-3 years ago I took my M Roadster to a collision shop to repair the front end because someone apparently drove into it while parking and cracked the "septum" between the kidney grilles (I know, mixed anatomical terms, but you know what I mean). After the repair was finished, I left the shop and had only about a 1/4 mile drive across a freeway overpass to get on the ramp on the other side to get on the freeway to drive home. Fortunately, before I got to the ramp, I noticed that the hood was moving up and down. I pulled over and checked and the shop had not slammed the hood shut and it was only held closed by the "safety" latch. I was so glad that I had noticed that because I probably would have ended up with the same results. You're lucky it didn't break the windshield.

Bummer that this happened. It's why I always slam my hood closed rather than pull it down and latch it by pushing on it. My S2000 had an aluminum hood so I learned always to slam it, never to push on it.

I think that all E85, E86 and M version hoods should fit. A dealer should be able to confirm. What a drag though! I feel your pain. I hope you weren’t hurt and good luck getting this sorted quickly and hassle free.

The M hoods have dual latches on the corners.
I'm sure it can be done but not a straight re & re.

My 2006 3.0si has the same double side latch arrangement. I wonder if a 2006 - 2008 hood will fit as long as the side latches are removed......

I consider myself very lucky with this situation. Can't believe it didn't smash the windshield or damage anything else. I couldn't find a hood locally to pickup, so I took a chance and bought a red hood from across the country off Ebay.

Turned out excellent and I can't believe how well the paint matches.

Looks like the '06-'08 hoods fit on the early cars because the threads for the single center latch are still there.

The '03-'05 hoods cannot be used on the later cars though, because there are no threads for the two outer latches in the hood.

Oi! Glad you're safe. Things could've ended up a lot worse than just needing a new hood!

OP, was there any ancillary damage to the wiring harness, windscreen cleaning plumbing, and mounts for the gas springs?
