Inspection items

Hi everyone,

Before I stored my car for the winter, my mechanic did a full inspection and he found the following:

- both right and left front lower control arms and bushings need to be replaced (he said the arms and bushings come as one piece)

- both right and left rear shock absorber top plates need to be replaced

How much, including labour and parts, should I be charged?

Thanks

Control arm and bushings are 2 separate pieces. Control arm & ball joints are one.
Why just the top plates? What's wrong with them?
I'm a bit confused by your mechanic.

Hi B328iC,

Sorry, I meant the ball joints, As well, he said the top plates are loose in their attachment to the body of the car (I hope I am explaining it properly).

Do you know what the charge should be for these items?

Thanks

I do all my own work as I have worked on cars most of my life. You can look into getting the parts through a bunch of different places. They have kits that are around $300 for the front that include the control arms and the control arm bushings with brackets. If you are replacing the arm you should get the bushings as well.
As for the rears it would be nice to know if they are just loose or needing replacement. Again if needing replacement there are stage 1 kits that have all you need as a lot of things wear out around the same time and it's best to replace things while your in there. Kits for the rear run 2-300 as well. As for labor cost I can't help you there. I know It takes me a weekend to do each end of the car unless I get really ambitious and then I could get it done much quicker. So figure $6-800 in parts to totally take care of most of the standard wear items in the suspension.

Vert or coupe? The rears a a bit more complicated to get to on the E85's.
