It said late 50s. I was around then. Didn't buy my own shoes in the 50s, though. lol

One manufacturer was Thom McAn. I remember them.

We used to get dragged into Thom McAn's every school year for new shoes.

Yeah, and my mom would always buy them a bit big so they would still fit at the end of the year.

And remember taps on your shoes?

Faced with the prospect of another ~2,000 mile road trip next month, I spent yesterday evening researching car seat accessories to keep my aging lumbar/back from hurting from 14-hour days on the road. Not quite to the point of buying my grandmother's beaded car seat cover yet, but definitely feeling the urge to chase kids off my lawn.....

I remember going to a Buster Brown store with my parents to buy "school shoes" and wondered what this gadget was. Good thing they didn't use it any more to check your feet inside the shoes! Radiation overdose...

I too was a customer (well, my mom was) of the local Buster Brown shoe store during my early years. I remember using that X ray machine so much that I am grateful that I still have recognizable human feet, and not flippers or something. The store set me up with my first (and only) shot at TV stardom on a local Saturday morning kids show sponsored by Buster Brown (1952/1953). Apparently I did not impress, as no further offers were forthcoming.

Do you remember who made them, just out of curiosity?

I asked because I thought other shoe companies made them as well.

Google says 1000s were produced by the Adrian X-Ray Company of Milwaukee. Here's a link to a Smithsonia article about them:
