Lots of folks on this site have working convertible tops. What do you need to know?

Any data collected in response will not be useful for any purpose I can think of.

If your top doesn't work, fix it, otherwise you should have a E86
Not sure what you'll get from these statistics since I'd hope most people fixed their roofs if they failed, so nearly everyone here should have a working roof.

Now if you asked how many people have working working cup holders

No I get your point, selling my car and getting the paperwork done for it, and I'm buying a coupe right after. Also my car has filling working cup holders and they are great

I cannot agree with the cup holder statement

My roof gave up a while ago, have a new motor sitting in the parts bin but I don't know for sure if its the motor or something else as the previous owner supposedly replaced the motor.

Lucky enough to have a hard top though so currently couldn't give two shits if the rag top is working or not

I wish, my top doesn't work and got it inspected by BMW, my motor is fine but the hydraulic lines are leaking. $4,887 to get it fixed by them

Mine works great.

Of course I had to pull the top and replace the hydraulic actuators (they were rebuilt). The motor looked new, but I did relocate to the trunk.

Yeah dealer price is crazy.. lots of diy on these but you'll need a garage if you can't do it in a day. Involve removing the top, are the lines shot or the hinge ?

So, your top doesn't work, yet you didn't think you should mention that in your classified ad

I agree with Pungo's observation: "So, your top doesn't work, yet you didn't think you should mention that in your classified ad."
Last year when I was Z4 shopping, I drove a half hour to see a Z4 that a used car dealership had on the lot, which looked good. I loved the color and it was in good shape, but a quick once over, when given the key, revealed that the windows would not go up and the top would not go down.
"It's a bad circuit board," the slick salesman said, "and we have it in the back and it will be installed right away."
"Call me when that happens," I said, handing him my card.
I never heard from him, and the ad was never changed to note that the car had giant electrical problems.
I wasted another half hour driving home.

Yeah agree 100%. Don’t hide the bad or neglect to mention it. It’ll only make things worse. When I was first shopping drove to a dealer in Ohio. I had asked very specific questions and was assured it was all good, on my paint question I asked about how the finish was and was given the response “minor average light scratches of normal wear that pics can’t pick up.” When we got there the hood looked like a cardboard box sat on it and was swirled all over on the hood. Scratches were deep enough to see primer and would require a complete respray. Heart sunk, salesman said what price I’d take it for and I told them they really couldn’t go low enough and I walked away wasting a full round trip day for nothing. That was the 3rd Z4 I looked at, ended up buying the 4th I saw.

As for the price OP was given from dealer that’s high. I had my motor and all lines/fittings replaced for that. Dealer quote for entire top replacement was 9k ish when I asked for curiosity.

Seems like getting honest information from a seller (mostly dealers, tbh) is never easy. Years ago went to look at a Miata 6 year old Miata with 6K miles on it. Dealer described it as "mint, no scratches or dents". Upon seeing the car it indeed had a number of scratches, including on the side view mirrors. Dealers response to me was "it is mint....for a 6 year old car". Ever since then I ask "tell me everything that is wrong, and can I see pictures of all scratches/dents (assuming car is described as in excellent condition".
