Which throttle body is right?
Local indy shop is suggesting my previous owner installed Dinan TB could be a source of a code we've been chasing for a while now, related to intake differential manifold pressure.
I have a 2007 Z4 3.0i that was built in 7/2007 (after 10/2006 the N52 had the plastic valve cover, no CCV, etc.). RealOEM shows only part# 13547516946. This part looks like the Dinan TB on there, but I don't want to go off that as it's "aftermarket" (bored out OEM). FCP Euro shows that one as fitting through 2008, but also a second for post 10/2006 cars. Part# 13547556118. The case that covers the gearing and electronics looks very different and the plate looks black with drilled holes. |

Not an expert but realoem has a reverse part number search.
It shows the 2nd throttle body is for the E89 Z4 and other cars but not our E85,E86 Z4. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partxref?q=13547556118 Update: Digging into those other cars a bit in realoem, the throttle body fits N52N and N53 engines. Perhaps if you have the N52N this will fit. Last edited by filtercoffee; 12-16-2020 at 05:23 PM.. |

Ah, here you go, this topic has been discussed before:
https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/d...e-body.896373/ I'd go with the realoem p/n (13547516946) all else being equal, even if the updated one might fit. |

Thanks filtercoffee (I like coffee too...much). Good info, appreciate you checking. Here's what confuses it a bit more for me.
The N52N from my understanding is also known as the N52K which was the 10/2006 and after refreshed N52. If I have the N52N/K (based on a 7/2007 build and items listed), you'd think I needed the new throttle valve. The RealOEM pic of 6946 actually shows the new case design of the 6118. So why would RealOEM list the original part number but new pic, and FCP confuse it by listing both for my VIN? I'll noodle on this one some more. Thanks again. |

I don't believe we have the N52N/K. When I do a vin lookup here for 2008 3.0si cars, it says N52, while a vin lookup for an E89 will say N52N.
https://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi That being said I'm not 100% sure. but I am seeing multiple indications that we don't have the N52N. For example, a forum search for "N52N" doesn't bring up a ton of results. oh, glad you too like the coffee |

Thanks for that link, that clears that up nicely. I just did the decoder for my vin and it says N52...no other letters.
There are some "experts" on YouTube and other places that say if you have the plastic valve cover and no CCV, you have the N/K. I'll stop listening to them and roll with the part RealOEM lists as you suggest. Thanks again. |

Further evidence is that realoem lists the engine as N52 even after 10/2006 and lists the correct engine beauty covers pre 10/2006 and post 10/2006. the post-2006 engine cover is shared with the N52N in the E89.
I trust realoem a lot, it has never been wrong in my personal experience. whereas online retailers are frequently slightly wrong in their fitment notes. |

Maybe call a BMW parts dept tomorrow for the throttle body. You give them the last 7 of your vin and they'll tell you the part number. That would be a good way to hopefully settle this with authority!

I'll do that, thanks. Appreciate the investigation too. One other possible cause to my confusion is European variants vs. US. The info I was looking at as the differences between N52 and the N/K versions were from oversees.

With the E85 you have the MSV70 as a DME, that requires the early version throttle body. The body used in the later E90s use the MSV 80 and its uses a different signal.

Thanks, rjahl, for confirming. Here's the update:
Installed the early version TB (6946), cleared the code and did the adaptation procedure (on for 15 seconds, off for 15 seconds, then start). The VDO one from FCP Euro looks identical to OEM (which is also made by VDO) but a couple hundred dollars cheaper. Before the repair, after clearing the code the 2d29 Manifold Differential Pressure Sensor Plausibility code would immediately pop up as "pending" and would light the SES light on the next start. The new TB now installed and adapted, there was no pending code and after several starts and trips, no pending code or SES light. I can't imagine with the immediate behavior change, this isn't a glitch. Though I've been surprised before. Let's hope. I guess for whatever reason, that Dinan TB wasn't liked anymore by the DME and the differential pressure sensor picked up on that. Otherwise, the car ran great. Good news is, in chasing unmetered air issues, bouncy idle, and oil leak issues, it's all new under the hood and hope this one solves it until the next thing comes along. Thanks again. |
