Thanks a testament that i will stand by a product i believe and help promote...which i have been doing for the past years with the grp buys and such i do at the other board (m5board.com)...as i know this industry is flooded with false claims and what not...

I gave in and bought the RPI scoop and BMC filter. Ordered them 3 days ago and they got here today. Very quick process and shipping time. Awesome service from RPI.
I might wait to install them later though. I haven't driven my M much lately(only drove it twice out of the last 4 months). So even if the scoop and filter gave me +30HP today, I'd probably not be able to tell the difference. I'll wait till I get to drive the car more often to get a feel of the baseline before I install the parts.

Great product and service
No question that Eloy/RPI provide outstanding service and make a high quality intake scoop, but those who are expecting a noticeable increase in power or torque may be disappointed.
I pride myself in having a fairly finely calibrated butt dyno and after running two high performance driving school events (four 25 minute sessions each at Pacific Raceway, a 2.25 mile road course) with the RPI scoop installed I cannot say I noticed any appreciable difference in speed or acceleration. The car is bone stock except for the RPI scoop; OE air filter and charcoal secondary filter in place. I've also done a track event with the stock inlet deflector removed and again noticed no difference. I'm not complaining; just sharing my observations for what they're worth.

hey Jim,
You must have been on a more technical track. One thing that people should remember is that below 40mph, there is not much of a gain, and even after that 12whp gain on a 3000+lbs car is not going to be very noticable with the butt dyno. Your best bet is to log your actual lap times or acceleration times. Its been tested over and over again and each high speed run with the scoop has yielded better times. I was at bimmerfest this weekend and many people have the scoops with much success. For example, the car in the MOtul booth has rpi scoops, so did the car in the Active Autowerks booth, the m6 in the evosport booth, the m5 in the stop tech booth, etc. |

Fairly technical track
Quote:
http://www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Turn_..._Raceway_track My top speed on the front straight (turn 1) is about 140 MPH. Insurance restrictions preclude use of timing devices at club driving school events so I don't have any lap time comparisons of scoop vs no scoop. The more direct air flow into the air box has got to improve engine breathing; I just haven't been able to "feel it" yet. I'll be out on the track again on May 15th and will make it a point to watch my tach and visual reference points to ascertain if I'm getting a better launch out of the turns and more RPMs at the end of the straights.

I should have mine in my car by this weekend. I'll do some pre and post vbox runs to determine and high speed performance increases on an unrestricted autobahn.

did it a couple weekends ago.....scoop and BMC intake
and i say is def worth the $210 not to justify the $210 that i spent....but i can feel a sig. diff via butt dyno esp at freeway speed....a gud example would be 70mph crusin' then down shift to 4th gear and WOT....you'll def feel the car being much more responsive and rpm climbs faster |

Here's my short review. I got both the RPI scoop + BMC filter. My experience is basically the same as jmillet's
The combo makes the intake/exhaust very very slightly louder. The difference in sound level is barely noticible and nothing crazy at all, which I like. Having owned the Dinan air scoop on my old M54 3.0i, I have no doubt the RPI scoop, in theory, should work well. I was able to feel the difference with the Dinan scoop on my 3.0i. But I honestly can't feel the performance gain on my Z4M with the RPI scoop and the BMC filter. Maybe it's just hard to notice an extra 8~10HP on a car that has 330HP to begin with. It's one of those mods that even if you do feel a difference initially, you probably forget about it after a couple of weeks. But you definitely feel good knowing you have it for as long as it's on your car.. Installation: For some reason I found the RPI scoop a PITA to install, and this is from someone who's installed many sets of suspensions/coilovers, the ACS side deflectors, the Dinan air scoop, and man others. I actually find the Dinan scoop much easier and much more straight forward to install once you remove the front bumper which is very easy, just time consuming - about 20 min. There's no doubt in my mind that the Dinan scoop is designed and built better than the RPI scoop. With the RPI scoop, you do get what you pay for; and priced at $129, it's honestly very fair and worth the money. Someone mentioned that he bought the Dinan scoop from some dealer for low $200's. Personally, and this is just for me, if I could do it again, I'd have gotten the Dinan scoop again or not bothered with this mod altogether. However, I must say RPI's customer service is superb.

On a scale of 1-10, how hard do you think the RPI scoop is to install for say a person that normally doesnt install her own mods?? It seems that the $125 or so dollars are worth it but I dont want to have to take the car anywhere to get it installed. Any opinions?

its easy. just takes some patience. its not plug a play so YOU have to make it work.
Eloy if you think this is an 9 out of 10 in difficulty then what would you rate coilovers or brakes? |
