Thumbs up Finally an AUX plug!

Finally got an AUX adapter installed. I went cheap with the Bavauto replacement ashtray version. Not a bad install except for getting the #$$(%^%! center vents out. Managed to do it without damaging them, though. No job for the hamfisted.

Sunny and springlike for the rest of the week, so I'll be getting plenty of use out of it.

I'm using the short audio cable that comes with the Griffin AutoPilot, and I found just wrapping it around the lid for the ash tray and pushing it in the crevice keeps things nice and neat.

sirmalloc,
How do you like the AutoPilot? I have used the Griffin TuneFlex in another car, and have liked it, but it seems to be in the way in the Z4. I have seen the AutoPilot, but haven't decided on it yet.
Also, does your power socket turn off with the key? It seems that mine doesn't (2003 Z4), and I was concerned about forgetting to unplug the AutoPilot or TuneFlex.

I love it. The physical play / next / previous buttons on it make changing tracks on my iPhone easy when I can't look away from the road. Here's a link to my full setup, showing the ProClip mount and dock that I am using. The socket doesn't turn off with the key, but the power draw for keeping the led ring lit on the AutoPilot is negligible. I've left it plugged in and not driven the car for a week and never had any issues.

What was wrong with the AUX on/under the dash? Or did the 2006 not have that?

Well, it was cheaper than a DICE or similar option. I went the same route as you with my X5 and cut the hell out of my hand drilling a hole in bottom of the ashtray. When I screw up, it's usually with a power tool in my hand. This time I didn't need a power tool, so everyone was safer.

Plus this version has the added feature of a rubberized ashtray. No more noise from the coinage.

a ruberized ashtray would be nice for that. Luckily my music is usually loud enough that I cannot hear coins move anyway

Couple of questions on the Bavauto kit...

Since I've never pulled out the stock head unit, it appears the aux adapter just plugs into the head unit...that correct? They give instructions on what to pull off in what order to pull out the head unit? Just trying to gauge the difficulty

Bonus question

Anyone know if a stock head unit from 2007- would fit/work with a 2003? Reason I ask is mine is acting flaky (i.e. the tuner just stopped working yesterday while driving...stopped to get gas, turned the car back on and it was working again) so I might want to replace and getting one with the AUX port available would be nice

I just got the cable for the e46 or x3, I can't remember, for like ~$40 and stuck the socket in the panel under the climate controls, like it is for 2007+

All Z4 radios support AUX input, there's nothing special about the 2007 radio in this regard aside from the fact that it came with the cable under the dash stock from the factory. (If you got a new radio from any year you'd still have to get the AUX cable and put it somewhere)

As for compatibility, I know there were some minor changes over the years, mp3, support for HD radio (never figured out if that was part of the radio or a module for the radio) but I've never heard of a new radio/nav control thingy not working in a newer car.

protip: if you get a 2005+ black colored radio you can swap the faceplates so that it will still match the rest of your gray interior stuffs.

I purchased a head unit from a 2008 BMW X3 for my 2003 Z4 (for the mp3 capability) and swapped the trim from my original head unit so that it would match the rest of the dash. The X3 and the Z4 head units are the same. You would still need to buy the aux cable if you want that feature. I still have the original 2003 head unit if anyone is interested. It works fine. It just won't play cd's recorded in mp3 format.

oooh now you've got me interested... where did you buy the head unit from? private seller via eBay/Craigslist? or dealership?

I think I'd like to swap the head unit and pick up an AUX cable, I better start looking at the classifieds
