OBD II code readers

Anyone using an OBD II code reader for your car? Saw one at Harbor FRT. I know probably piece of crap. Anyway, seeing what you all are using as I get sick of running to the dealer everytime I have an issue. I've also heard only BMW's tool will read "hidden codes" Truth?

Heres the HF tool

I don't know much about them, but it wouldn't surprise me if the generic readers didn't get to all the BMW codes.

FWIW, LeatherZ carries the Peake tools

I bought the one off the shelf at Walmart, and it's worked fine so far. Innova 3100. The website on the tool says www.canobd2.com

I believe it was around $99. There's no airbag reset option.

The one your looking at is an ODB2 reader which reads generic ODB2 codes which is helpful to diagnose problems but it doesn't read the more advanced "BMW" codes. For that you would need a GT1 running DIS.

If your light comes on, you can pull the code and see what it is but with the GT1 you will get more specific information and readings.

hmmm.... looks like LeatherZ has dropped most of the Peake tools.
The Peake code reader will do the BMW codes.

Quote:
* R5/FCX3-16 Works on BMW Model Years 2001-2007
* Displays REAL BMW "factory" engine fault codes (unlike OBDII tools that only display generic error codes)
* Resets the Check Engine & Service Engine Soon Light.
* Resets the Oilservice - Inspection Lights & Service Mileage.
* Includes instruction and code lookup booklet.

There is a huge difference between OBDII (generic) codes and the highly specific BMW “factory” codes. The R5/FCX3-16 accesses BMW’s vast array of “factory” diagnostic, analysis and repair codes enjoyed by BMW dealers
$140 here

Thanks guys for the help. The GT1 looks pretty cool but some of the cheaper sources(under $500) (ebay Hong Kong)seem iffy, Would be nice to be able to program some things though but not for $1000 plus. The Peake tool looks good for diaging codes.
