Hit a dog on the freeway

Just got a FML moment today...

Was driving down the freeway and all of a sudden a dog runs right in front of my car. I didnt have time to react so I hit it head on. It was a small dog that looked like Milo from The Mask if you guys ever watched the movie. The impact damaged my lower bumper but it ripped my lower panel on the front.
I limped my car to the side since there was this horrible grinding sound coming from the front. The lower panel was dragging on the floor and my oil cooler was broken off and was hanging on the lower panel as well.
After, I taped up the lower panel so it was no longer dragging and took it to a reputable mechanic to have the mechanical damage checked up on. Well when he put it on the lift, it wasnt looking too good. Lot of the panels were broken and mounts / brackets were just ripped off. He couldnt give me an estimate but he told me that it would at least cost me $700 in labor.
Knowing the amount that it would cost, I decided to go thru my insurance. I was hesitant to go thru insurance because i really want to have a clean history for my car.

Sorry for the long rant... and wish me luck tomorrow. Gonna take it in to a estimator from my insurance to get an estimate.

Poor dog, I'm guessing the dog didn't survive?

FML? It's a car, it can be repaired or replaced, it's not a living thing. What about the dog? I'm guessing its life is far more than f'd since it's clearly dead.

Yes, I know nothing could have been done, yes this was some random thing, and yes it sucks the car was damaged. I don't want to see anyone's car damaged--and if that happens it's unfortunate and I sympathize. I wish it had not happened. I hope the repairs go well and the car ends up like new (with a good shop it should come out fine).

But geez, not one word of regret or even a single thought given about the dog other than a description of what it looked like in the second before its life ended?

I'm going to try and fall back asleep now and not think about this--which isn't easy since my dog, who is here next to me, looks an awful lot like the dog who was hit.

EDIT: I really should have considered how the OP felt--and that he might have left off the dog details given it just a bad deal all around--and offered support rather than the response above. Apology given deeper in the thread, post 51, which has what I should have posted here in the first place.

When reading the OP, I was also expecting information on the dog (I'm not a pet owner, btw). In regards to insurance and your car, most companies consider striking an animal as a comprehensive loss and thus should not have an affect on your insurance rates.

As a veterinarian, it is nice to see the responses above. It is after all, just a car and can be repaired. The dog, I am sure, did not share the same fate.

Sad day...

As a pet owner myself, I too would like to have seen some comment on the poor critter. But before we condemn Vasaline to 40 lashes and stuff, let's hear from him. Perhaps he feels quite badly about the unfortunate dog, but decided not to state it here.

Cheers,

Interesting reactions. I wonder why I don't hear such outrage over the fate of those poor deer that wander on to our roads and give their lives to total our cars. All those unfortunate, innocent, cute little insects that splatter themselves over the front of my car are tragic as well. Perhaps the OWNER of a pet that allows their dog to run free and pose such a danger to motorists should be thrown on a freeway in front of traffic.

Sad to hear this. I feel that all pets should be chipped so that when this type of thing happens the irresponsible owner of the pet can be found and be charged.

Is it just me, or is this thread off the rails already? I have a Jack Russell too, but come on, the guy was just sharing a story and probably spared us of some obvious (and likely grotesque) details.

Holy tree hugging responses in here...

It's a car forum. I'm sure the OP was not HAPPY he hit the dog for the dog's sake, but at the end of the day the dog (or dog owner however you want to look at it) cost him over $500 (deductible plus whatever value it loses for having the little blemish on the carfax).. Sure I'd be a little heartfelt for Fido but again at the end of the day, no matter how sad you are about the dog that decided to play in traffic, it doesn't fix your bumper for free..

Good luck OP. Try not to worry about the little critter too much sounds like there's nothing you could have done different..

As a dog owner, some more info would have been nice, like at least to know you checked on it after you hit it and didn't leave it barely alive and in pain or something... I hit a deer with my old mustang and broke all 4 of its legs. Had to go get a gun to put it down myself since it was "outside city limits" and the cops would not do it.

Sucks about the car too. I don't think I'd go as far as Villalona (who ironically is military so has possibly killed a human before, let alone a straying dog). I don't think giving the OP so much greif is really necessary. If there was something more to post about the dog, I am sure he would have.
