My new custom BBK using 135I calipers!
finally got it on today! it bolted up like a dream, i even could use my stock rotor dust sheild!
picked them up off a 135I and modified the carrier and brake lines to work with the Z4M rotors, working on fabricating the rears. if anybody has a Z4M rear rotor that is trash and has not thrown it away yet please let me know, i would love to use it to make the proper attachment brakets for the rear caliper. this was as easy an istalation as an aftermarket BBK, I LOVE IT!!!! best part is the price! all parts included was just over $700 invested. it truley fit as if it was made for it! i dont think these will be able to hold the performance of a well driven z4m?? ive read about the pistons cracking up numerous times...... i know OP has a 3.0l but for the guys with the ///M cars.... hmmm i not sure this would be an upgrade from what you already have...

OP is correct, that was all due to someone not using the correct pad, I think it was cut to fit or something like that. The only complaint for this brake off the e82 was the small rotor but OP addressed that by using this with the Z4M rotor. |

How are the carriers modified? If holes are being re-drilled to accommodate the larger overall diameter of the MZ4 rotor, then that significantly weakens the structure of the carrier.
Ideally a new bracket machined from billet aluminum would be the best solution, although that's going to cost a pretty penny.

Also by carrier I mean the caliper carrier.
So we would have the caliper attaches to the carrier and the carrier attaches to the steering knuckle the bearing hub assembly mates right up with the Z4M rotor. Good stuff! |

I would be hesitant to use that setup for serious track work or racing. For the street it might be adequate.
Only reason being that the brake components see a tremendous amount of force loaded onto them, and a lot of change in said force. Any weak point in the carrier, like where it's welded, would likely bear the brunt of that twisting and changing force. I'm not a structural engineer or metallurgist. But I would seek some serious professional opinion before I put that in a car.

on my AP racing setup the the carrier is MASSIVE and i mean massive.... keep an eye on where they are welded.... this doesnt seem like the best solution..... see the grey pieces in front of the caliper.... as i said, very very beefy and nearly half the size of the massive caliper.....This is a critical part of the caliper... When im standing on my brakes @ 110mph, i NEED to know im going to be able to stop.....

Ok I'm going to have to pop a pic in here as its not as seriouses as you guys are thinking. All it is, is a round disk 5 mills thick that's welded on one part of the carrier that spaces the caliper out far enough so it properly works with the rotor. The stock steel carriers are probably stronger as any aluminum carrier. Trust me guys this isn't as bad as I think you think it is
Just like some add a spacers on your wheels I just added one on the caliper. It's no different than many custom brake setups with custom carriers, like I said earlier it's probably stronger now than it was before as soon as I can I'll post a pic. And either way since my car is an auto I don't think it will see a track or anything, different reasons I'm doing this anyhow. Need to fill in the gap lol.... |
