BMW M GmbH Founder Explains How It All Began

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
In a special appearance, the founding father of BMW M GmbH (as BMW Motorsport GmbH), Jochen Neerpasch meets with current BMW M boss Markus Flasch for some Q&A about the story of the foundation and establishment of BMW's Motorsport division.

Towards the end of the video, Flasch asks Neerpasch about his current automotive stable.
Neerpasch's response comes as a complete surprise and somewhat ironic although understandable at the same time due to his age.

However, that is not to say Neerpasch doesn't still have gasoline in his veins.
As we'd expect from the person who was instrumental in the establishment of BMW's Motorsport division, Neerpasch still very much enjoys a nice drive, especially of a car he helped create.
Here's recent footage of him driving a 3.0 CSL along the famous Transfăgărăşan Highway in Romania.

I'm surprised he didn't slap Flasch for ruining his legacy

We know how it began. I'm afraid of where it will end!

Herr Neerpasch is like my dad's age.
They're both nearing 80.
My dad just wants something to get him from point A to B.

What a beautiful car and such a great place to drive it. I would love a modern remake with M3 mechanicals.

Way to insult the founder to his face. The words "I didn't expect" should never be said about an original M car. No wonder things are going to shit. You got a guy like that running the place now. Smh

The setting is indeed all it’s cracked up to be.

The road quality though is variable, and ever since that fateful Top Gear episode, it is packed. Not unlike the Stelvio.

If you want to experience it, best start at dawn or go at dusk.

I have driven the Grossglockner twice and that was great. Once in an E36 328i SE and the second, in an E60 525d MSport.

July 2011. This was the second time and a cold summer, hence the amount of snow.

I can tell by the smiles in the video thumbnail that this won't capture the true disappointment Neerpasch feels about the current state of the motorsport division. BMW currently offers 19 cars with M badges.

M has become a marketing arm of BMW with no regard for heritage and legacy. They still produce a couple great cars but the whoring out of the M badge across the BMW line to sell cars to badge snobs at the risk of frustrating enthusiasts is pathetic.

If Neerpasch doesn't genuinely despise what's become of one of the most storied and successful motorsport divisions in automotive history, I'd be shocked.

lol the M division is a far cry from what it once represented.

-M SUVs
-M sport everything
-lease deals anyone can afford (I actually googled for e46 m3 lease deals and people were paying nearly 1000 a month on a 50-60k msrp e46).

The modern M cars do look great though. and make good daily drivers.

A: Did you even watch the video?
B: Are you and Neerpasch good buds? You guys go out and grab a couple of cold ones during which time he tells you of his disappointment with the sub brand?

You know what the biggest disappointment is when you start something from the beginning? When you hand over the reigns to that entity and it's run into the ground and eventually closes down or is shut down. BMW is still active in racing at different levels and it still makes M street cars. What people seem to forget is that even an M4 GTS isn't an actual race car---it's trackable car for sure, but certainly not a legit race car. Once you realize that M street cars are in fact street cars to the core, you start to realize how close minded it is to not offer a M version of a SUV. And if it puts more money in BMWs pocket to continue offering the things you actually like, you realize how brilliant that plan actually is.

A couple of yrs ago I drove an F80 comp on the track and thought it was fantastic---in stock form. Really nice to drive in that setting. Isn't that the pinnacle of what an M car should be? You don't want an M SUV, don't buy one. Pretty simple.
