Well said. I made the switch to dedicated snows and summers years ago when I was into Saab's and haven't looked back. As I was told, all seasons are really no seasons if you care about performance.

I run dedicated winter tires in any car that I plan to drive in winter... there's just no substitute.

I would sooner use an M3 with winters vs the X5 with all seasons. Fortunately all of them have a second set of wheels and winter tires

I'm 100% sure winter tire is better than all season though for you guys who lives in big city (i.e. you can't just put your tire in garage) what's your alternative. BMW Manhattan charge $800 just for storing tire for one year...

I have yet to see a tire comparison video that includes an all-season tire. Then again, most of these videos are designed to sell more wheels and tires.

The tires in the video appear to be:
  • Bridgestone Noranza 001 (Winter Studded)
  • Continental ContiWinterContact TS 830 P (Winter)
  • Michelin Pilot Super Sport (Summer)
  • Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 (Summer Slick)

[Video]: BMW Explains Summer vs Winter Tires

With the colder weather incoming, BMW has decided to remind everyone about the difference between summer vs winter tires.

I would love to see a video showing all season as well, want to see how mediocre it is between Summer and Winter in both conditions

These comparisons are plain & simply incomplete without including all seasons. Of course they will not be as good as the dedicated tires in either case, but it would be really beneficial to clearly understand how much is being lost.

For me summer & winter tires only are not an option as the shoulder seasons in Colorado are too unpredictable for summer tires and I don't want to be running winter tires as early/late as May & October.

Instead I go with a three tire plan. Dedicated winter tires (Oct/Nov through April/May), all seasons (April/May through Oct/Nov) and extreme performance summer tires for the track.

In general, running two sets is going to be better than just running one set all year round. However, I'm of the opinion there are some conditions where an all season compound could be better than either a summer or winter compound, especially if the tires have the appropriate tread pattern. All season tires feel "just right" in 40-50F, for example. That's a little warm for a lot of snow tires and it's a little cool for many summer tires. So regardless of whether you run one set or two, you are making a compromise in two of the four seasons. Perhaps the best approach, although highly impractical, would be to run THREE sets as one poster suggested above! Summer, Winter, Spring/Fall

I really think they should've shown a simple cold temperature comparison instead of the packed snow to get the point across. Yes, winter tires make these cars driveable in the snow, but this doesn't point out the stupidity of driving on summer tires on cold payment well enough.

These 40-50°F mornings have me wishing I could make the swap midday. It takes a good 30+ min of normal-ish driving to heat up my tires enough to have sufficient traction, before that, I might as well put on some ice skates.

I never had issues with All Seasons, but you have to be slow in turns. Winters give you more confidence but they are terrible when the roads are dry and the ride is bouncy when your car has sport suspension. All Seasons offer the best compromise IMO. They also wear out less and you have more fun when the roads are dry than Winters.

Utterly pointless video made by BMW so they sell more spare sets of wheels and tyres.

My go to vid. Winter vs all season vs summer

Btw, I will never own a set of all seasons again. Dedicated summers and winters for me.

I agree with this video, but I don't want to live through another winter tire debate. It's more polarizing than climate change and abortion. It's tearing the car community apart.

The tire debate is annual, as sure as sweeping leaves in Autumn.

There is no debate, with winter tires you have control over your car on snow and ice, as we can see here.
My favorite for winter are Nokian Hakkapelittas.

Damn that's crazy. I would think a storage locker or storage service might be a bit cheaper for the amount of space you'd require for a set. In NYC winters are definitely needed if you're driving your car at all in the winter. Just adds to the cost of owning a car here. I'm fortunate enough to keep my set at my parents in NJ. Not everyone has the same luxury though.

I can probably store somewhere else the problem is how do I transport them, my backseat is permanently stuck with a child seat and trunk is permanently occupied with a light stroller...

Otherwise I can definitely find cheaper place to store...
