Motor mount heat shield
There is a heat shield on the passenger side motor mount. Does anyone know what is being shielded from the heat and what risk might there if that heat shield was not there? I ask because the people that I hired to install the vibra tech motor mounts did not re-install the heat shield as they did not feel that it was any longer necessary. Any thoughts?

This was touched on in the other motor mount thread.
IMO it should still be used. There is a lot of heat from the exhaust in that area. Just because the rubber is encased in an aluminum pot, does not mean that it is protected from the heat It's probably better than the OE mount, but I figure ever bit helps.

If I paid somebody to install, I would want the heat shield along with it. It can only help prolong the life of the mount. Keep in mind that there is a tab that has to be flattened for it to fit now.

I didn't reinstall mine but I have catless headers that are jet hotted. So, in theory, they shouldn't radiate as much heat as stock catted headers.

Interesting thoughts. You see I'm wondering if I should put them through the bother of reinstalling a part that may not be necessary. I will do it if I really feel that it is a relevant component with the vibra tech mounts.

My left side stock mount was fine when I replaced it.
I thought my right side was fine too, until I removed it and found a big crack that was hidden by the heat shield. I'm going to wager that it didn't just crack from age alone, it degraded from heat, and it would have degraded faster without the shield. My recommendation would be to get the shield put back on, or do it your self. Given what I found, I'm considering adding more shielding.

The crack was in the stock mount.
2006 with 88k miles. Gently driven. YMMV. Replaced with the vibra tech. As was said, not sure if they have the same sensitivity to heat, but heat + rubber = no.

One of the reasons why I'm having my headers coated.
