Z4 Roadster Spoiler Poll - Update #3

I've owned my Z4MR for 7 years now. It is still my favourite car to drive when I get the chance.

I always wanted to add a lip spoiler to the roadster trunk but there isn't one that's pleasing to the eye on the market. Only the OE Ad lip spoiler, which never made it to production, is close enough to what I desire.

I've recently met a friend who's been developing and producing body kits for various cars for over 20 years. We've decided to show some love for the Z4 community.

We prefer to start with a body contoured, minimalist lip spoiler that is combination of Ad lip spoiler and the OE style spoiler without the gap above the 3rd brake light. At the same time, a single piece, minimalist duck tail has stir some heated debate as well. We have start some prep work and waiting to finalise the design. We need some input from you guys and girls so we can settle the score.

Poll:
1. Minimalist Lip spoiler (FG matte black)
2. Minimalist Lip spoiler (Carbon Fibre)
3. Minimalist 1 piece Duck tail (FG matte black)
4. Minimalist 1 piece Duck tail (Carbon Fibre)
5. Any other suggestions?

I am also on the same boat as you! I would love a rear spoiler that isnt outrageous, but a subtle lip type spoiler similar to the e46 lip mtech spoiler. I would love a lip spoiler, but a duck tail wouldnt be all that bad either. Both would have to conture the trunk lines well.

I couldn't be happier with the look of the spoiler I put on my car. Make this in CF, and I'll paint it except for the portions of my current spoiler which are matte black. Expose the CF!

NickyC, is that the OE style lip spoiler with the centre painted black? Do you have a birds eye view of it?

We would like to make it CF as well, but cost is a concern. If most prefer CF and willing to pay for the additional cost, we'll definitely make it happen.

Yep, it's the OE style with the center painted black. I took some more quick photos for you. I love the spoiler and think it compliments the car nicely!

that bmw spoiler just doesnt look right to my eyes, the way it sits in the middle section, the gap in the middle between it and the trunk lid, hell even the parts where it actually sits on the trunk lid, it just spoils the lines of the car massively, ......

the alpina roadster S spoiler is by far the best available for this car and is actually a functional piece too , it was designed with aero in mind according to the sale literature for the roadster S.

The car needs a simple lip the runs the entire length of the back panels for the best look, like a minimalist version of the alpina setup... but for it to look right and add to the "wideness" of the rear it Needs to sit on the rear quarter panels too like the alpina setup.

It cracks me up how different we all are about our cars. When I first read this thread, I was in agreement with Beedub, but after looking...I am not so sure it looks like it belongs. The factory one looks ok, but it also does not look like it really belongs. With the shape of the rear trunk, I am liking no spoiler. It is just too complex an area for a spoiler.

To me, that looks awful lol.

I guess this isn't a one size fits all project!

It is one of the most contoured piece of metal for the roadster. I also like shape without the spolier; however, I just wish it's a bit more prominent or a bit taller when compared to the long hood, viewing it from the side.

Let's clear something up on the terms for clearer discussion.
We are using lip spolier term to classify top mounting only. (like the OE style)

Duck tail style to be mounted on top and over the rear edge of the trunk. (like the Alpina) The 3rd brake light does limit designs in this case.

We want to build a one piece spoiler only for ease of mounting and minimalist, OEM+ look.

Great input so far guys, please keep them coming. Our ETA for the prototypes be produced is next month so we still have a couple of weeks to finalize

Thanks,

just s simple lip spoiler that runs the length of the rear, so minimal that it doesnt even need to worry about the brake light , something that doesnt loose the original ducktail of the stock trunk lid if possible.

if you actually do this ill b VERY happy .

i cant lie.... this is my guilty pleasure!! you don't loose the original ducktail of the boot lid but something interesting is happened , according to the writeup these are actually functional also, sadly on lighter colour cars they don't see to look as cool!!

The ACS never really appeal to us. It doesn't flow with the body and I doubt they actually put through a wind tunnel test which is a very expensive setup. We will only claim to be an aesthetic piece for looks. Down force not included.

it's also functional designed with the front splitter to actually aid aero.... still the best option for the z4R, best looking and rarest.

sadly very expensive to.

I like the Alpina version but I do think just a very small lip should do the trick. Something that extends beyond the trunk too.

Jmo.

However, If the decision is made on something and I like it, I'm most probably gonna get it. I do think the trunk needs a little bit of something.

Agreed
Simple "lip liner" would work best.
E89 I know but you get the idea

The only z4 spoiler I ever saw and liked was from a company called MS
I dont know if it ever went into production or that it was a design study for a show or so (as you never see it IRL or in shops)
All the other rear spoilers are pretty ugly and dont suit the design of the car imho, even the alpina one.

this is the MS spoiler; I dont think it would be hard to reproduce:

But it has been made, this is a picture, not a render.
This is the one I would like to see made/sold

It looks like a crappy Veilside spoiler on a mid 90s JDM car haha.

I know this is all personal taste...... so here's my $0.02.

I'd prefer a very simple lip that can be installed with two sided tape or the BMW adhesive. I don't want to drill holes. I believe the E46 M3 had something like this that sat just on the trunk lid. The C-class Merc also has this as well (see the link below).

http://www.cksperformance.com/images/489674785.jpg

I think something along the lines of NickyC has but that doesn't have the gap between the spoiler and the trunk lid would look good....... maybe even with a little less bulk to it's form. Make it cheap and if you want the CF look, wrap it in vinyl CF wrap.
