Will Z4 ever get the upcoming M3 engine?
Here's a fun question I been wondering - will the ///MZ4 get the E92 M3's 400+ hp engine when it comes out maybe next year? From my test drive the car is already a monster but you can't ever have enough HP's right

Almost a guarantee it will I think thats the secret car alot of us are anticipating. As with the Z3 version, BMW kept the lower HP engine that the e36 M3 ran (which was the M3 of the time when the Z3 M Roadster was released). Then when the E46 M3 with 333hp came out, BMW offered that very same engine in the Z3 one year later, giving a tremendous amount of power. So by that timeline, the current Z4 M roadster has the 333hp engine from the current e46 M3, but when the E90m3 with the anticipated V8 engine arrives we should get that engine a year later. (The trick to all this is that its really hard to anticipate what BMW will do by precedent because sometimes they will randomly go on a new course.) |

Hate to burst your bubble. The current Z4 is the first and last generation Z4. BMW brass have decided instead to take the roadster back to its roots. Smaller, & less expensive. You'll see the Z2 replace the Z4, and a Z9 for BMW's halo car. Talk of a new Z4 and Z6 was considered and determined the models were to closely related to eachother. The move was then to let the current Z4 to run its model line life and be replaced. Dont fret. I own an M roadster. The Z2 is gonna be wicked, and to me a worthy replacement. Dual Clutch tranny and for the M2 roadster rumors of the twin turbo 6. Its gonna be 400 lbs lighter than the current z4. The DSG, and TT6 will provide you w/ a roadster far faster than the current Z4. Whats even better is you can easily mod the new turbo engines for increased power! Its gonna be a nice one!

JMO, but as the Z4... I doubt it.
If & when the Z2 comes out, that's when you'll see it. Z2 will be 400lbs lighter c/w the TT & more of a true sports car. Z4 will be discontinued & a new Z9 will be the halo car.

The Z4 won't get a V8 from BMW. The smaller Z2 and it's at-some-point-released Coupé cousins will stick to straight sixes at the largest as well. The new larger Z9 will probably have a V8 and perhaps a highest-end V10 version available as an RS8-killer. But the Z4 will return to it's roots (like someone said) and be smaller again like the Z3 was, with the Z2. And BMW won't want to manufacture too many 2-seater models, especially when Coupé models of them are expected on the market as well, more so now that they will focus on making all the Cabriolet's folding hardtop Coupé-Cabrios (CCs) in the future (on the E63, perhaps with the facelift or next model - E93, now.)
Best regards, Jussi |

The Z4 will get the S65 engine (V8).
The one in testing that has been caught with heavy camo is housing the N54 engine(TT 3.0 I6). Z4 with N54 engine Z4 M with S65 engine The Z9 will have the S85 engine (V10) the N64 engine (TT 4.4 litre V8) Z9 with N64 engine Z9 M with S85 engine (whether this will be the 5.0 litre V10 or the rumoured 5.5 litre V10 will remain to be seen) |

I would love say it is in my head but it isn't.
With regards to the Z4 M with the S64 engine, please read http://www.bimmer-mag.com/art2/art2p3.html Z9 engine options, I would not reveal sources, but expect it to happen when the Z8/9 gets approved- I think it has been approved already. Last edited by chonko; 03-06-2007 at 02:33 PM.. |

BMW is driving forward with plans for a lightweight, no frills roadster: the Z2. Running four-cylinder engines, the Z2 will be a compact two-seater pitched squarely at the Mazda MX-5. When it arrives in 2011, the Z2 will be the third model in BMW's Z range. The Z4 Mk2 is due in 2009, while a new flagship Z8 should roar in around 2010.

This is the Last year for the M Coupe / M Roadster. The S54 does not comply with 2008 Emissions and the new Body style to be realeased in 2009 will sport the new V8 Engine and will no longer be called the Z4, Most likely a Z5 from what I have read, and will only come in a roadster Version with a retractable Hard Top.
