Road America Laps

Our little group of 15 drivers decided Road America would be a good destination for July 4th, 2020…so we hit the road. Our first time at the track, so it took a little to get comfortable with the flow. They said no passing in the kink, so of course we decided that would be a good place to work on passes on a new track. Tom hooked up the camera we started playing.

The laps aren’t the quickest, and I have a little more power than a stock S54, but we managed to stay together and get some laps in working together. Pretty much the other BMWs you see in the video are our group…it was a Ford Shelby club we were driving with, so the BMWs were oddballs. I figured out turn 6 on day 2…kept going wide trying to get a smooth arc, just had to find the right turn in point under the bridge.

Wish they kept the July 4th weekend slot…now NASCAR has the dates. They moved the event back one week to late June and that is a Pitt Race weekend.

In any case, love the track. I don’t see a lot of Z posts about RA, but recommend you put it on your list. And if your late June calendar is open, the Shelby club puts on a great 4-day event.

World class track, was there a few years back in my Z. Have been since in a 99' Miata. Usually go out there with the LAPS Inc or BMWCCA groups

Maybe not the best fun if the car is a slower car. In the E36 race car which has a top speed of 119mph, you could probably get a mani-peti between some turns. I did over 400 miles on-track the first day working the entire asphalt surface…couple laps inner, the outer, then down the middle, then on the race line, etc. The corner worker that sits on the bridge support right before the start/finish thought I was insane. Lap times got down into the 2:31-2:32 range, and then I dropped a valve.
