R8 V10 GATED vs Cayman GTS 4.0 6MT
So I am currently in the midst of an internal debate about what direction I should go.
R8 v10 GATED (plus another 15-20k car like a used mini) vs a 2021 Cayman GTS 4.0 Manual. I posted this on both rennlist and on the r8 forum and predictably the responses were basically affirming of the cars they chose the porsche folks said the Audi is less connected and integrated of a driving experience than the porsche the r8 guys said the r8 v10 is at another level in terms of driving experience, mainly because of the epic v10 and gated manual I currently have a 2020 M2 Competition manual which I really enjoy I've had 2 porsche 981 Cayman S manuals in the past which I really liked, but simply got bored of (I have a bit of a boredom with cars problem) I've only driven 2 gated r8s. One was a 2012 and one was a 2014 and both had about 30000km. I drove the 2012 first and was blown away by the sound, power and instant throttle response of the v10. It also handled well to me (I'll admit i am not a handling junkie, I enjoy twisties but I am not a track guy). I really liked it and was going to buy it but they wanted a $5000 deposit before would let me do a PPI which was weird so I walked. I then drove a 2014 and this car did not impress me, it felt looser, did not sound nearly as good, lacked the instant throttle response and power. I was not interested in that car. I kept looking for one, but they are hard to come by and the prices are now going up. Then comes out the GTS 4.0. A perfectly sized porsche with a big normally aspirated motor and a manual. I was intrigued. But then I think I've already had 2 caymans. On the other hand, if I get the 4.0, it can be my only car, it's liveable enough. It is also is the perfect size, gets less attention than the r8 and has better visability and clearance. The r8 is not doable as my only car, it is older and bigger and gets too much attention. I would have to get another parking spot and buy a manual car like a mini or golf as my regular car. I also wonder how much I would actually drive it in that scenario, I only do about 10000 miles a year so having 2 cars I would likely not drive the R8 all that much, like maybe once a week in good weather seasons. Anyhow as you can see I am all over the place, and would be grateful for any thoughts. |

My two cents, and I'm a Porsche guy, go for the Audi. If you get bored, drive it and then get rid of it. Then you've got it out of your system, the Porsche will always be available down the road but a good R8 might not. Either way, both are stellar cars and since you're not a track guy you'll likely enjoy either for your intended use.

The R8 V10 is my dream car. I was lucky enough to get to participate in an Audi driving event at a track and drove a V10 Plus (DCT) which was simply amazing. I am also a Porsche guy and loved my Boxster but the R8 was another level altogether. I would buy the Audi. You mentioned size. The R8 isn't big at all in my estimation. It was way smaller in person than I expected(as most supercars are). In looking at specs it is a few inches wider (76" vs 71") than the P-car but otherwise is the same.

Get the R8 and a 2nd daily. Since you already had 2 Caymans, I feel like you will get bored with the GTS as well soon enough if that's your only car. Having 2 cars will let you get a sense of occasions every time you get into the R8 and won't get bored with it that quickly. The MC still feels very special to me even after 11yrs+ because that's not my only car. When I feel like I'm getting a bit bored with it, I drive another car for a while and then fall right back in love with the MC.

It'll be R8 + 2nd for me as well.. For all the reasons others have said.
R8 is more of an event or purposeful car in this scenario. Drive it for the occasion.. weekend cruises, car & coffee etc. At the end of the day, if you don't like it after a while, sell it and you won't lose money. As for GTS, I haven't driven one but it seems it's gone softer and more daily comfort focused vs the R8. I bet you'll probably get bored quicker than the R8. NA V10 & stick there just isn't much out there now..

R8, more so in the spec you want it... V10 Manual
The GT4, though magnificent, I don't think will thrill as much. more so with the long gearing, so you may get fed up quickly. And R8 may actually appreciate as they are of a breed of the past. |

one more for the R8
I really thought long and hard about the 4.0 Cayman but I just couldn't get that excited about it. Aside from being NA, it just wasn't different enough from my 718 CS. JMO but you would like get bored again. In this case I don't think 3rd time would be a charm. |

Love the new Cayman GTS. Chris Harris swoons over it. It's a great awesome sports car.
But the R8 is a supercar for everyday. V10 is special. ... and Iron Man loves it 3000. |

Get the R8 V10. Why?
#1 the "clack, clack" sound between shifts with the gated shifter. It's a mechanical sound that you only get to hear due to man/machine interface. You make it happen not a computer. #2 it is the last gated manual transmission that any manufacturer will most likely ever make. #3 you get the car because it has a gated 6-speed manual transmission hooked up to a V10 engine and that sound at full chat goes directly to your ears and then your brain and you can't get it out of your head. #4 see above |

R8 .. wish i bought it back when I was first deciding between the R8 and the M coupe. I was hopeful the R8 would've come down in price but sadly it did not. lol
Seems like you ask this question each year or two.. maybe need to address what is the underlying problem that causes you to switch so often? Why do you get bored so quickly? I find it almost pointless to have fast or exciting cars in Canada, can't use them anywhere so the thrill of having it wears off quickly and that 500hp is as useable as 200hp on the street. Unless you enjoy tracking the car? Do you track your cars?

actually I still enjoy short bursts of acceleration when I get the chance so I still enjoy a powerful car... I don't track my cars... |

Not to be too critical but here goes anyways
Both the cars in the discussion I find less than interesting. Hard to compare them to an E85 or E86, even less so if you throw in an S54 to the mix. I give this string a big MEH! |

I used to have that itch to change cars all the time too. Then too many others things started competing for my cash flow. haha
Best of luck in what you chose, but I would go for the V10 R8. lol .. maybee

If it were up to me, I'd get the one less likely to depreciate. And surprisingly that's the NEW car (2021 GTS).
I've got 2 buddies, both with 2016 GT4s, and I'm absolutely flabbergasted that neither one of their cars have lost a PENNY in value, even with the new GT4s being released last year. Like literally, both of them can sell their cars TODAY and make money. That's just astounding to me. Here I am, nearly 15 years after buying my M Z4 Coupe, a much lower production number, mind you. One owner, me. Babied like no other. And I'd be shocked if I get 60% of what I paid for (not that I would ever sell, but whatever). Mean time, both of them have had people offer more than $10K than what they paid for their USED 2+ owner GT4s. Insane. I hear the GTS market is just as hot.
