Finally found my wheels....... after 6 months
Yup, super excited. They need to be refinished but I'm really happy to have found this set. 19" Hamann PG2's. Tossed on the rear just so I could see what things will look like ............

The tire on the rim now is a 275. Rears are 10" wide with an offset of et19. The rubber is finished right down to the metal strands by the PO. I haven't decided on rubbers yet.
The guy I'm using to refinish them says these two piece can sometimes be a bear to refinish. Pulling the two parts apart may require heat and there's risk of them snapping apart if you're not careful (that would make me cry). Loc tite material in the barrels has to be very carefully cleaned/removed which takes time and lot of q-tips with the right "guck" remover. Then you have to be careful when re-torquing them back together as well. New hardware from OZ highly recommended as the old threads are stretched when these are assembled at the factory. Little details is that the hardware is all stamped with OZ. He said we must rebuild it with the correct hardware (of course) to maintain the originality of the set. Love it. This guy is HUGE on the details which is what I wanted. Right now we're searching for the OZ tool to remove the hardware. The re-finisher said he may have it but he's not 100% sure until he has the rims in hand. I'm having the tires removed this week by a friend of mine. So, re-finishing wise, I want to go with a polished set of barrels and something similar to a gunmetal center I think. Mind you, I'm not 100% decided yet. The Z4 is red. Considering options. Gold anything is out though!! And I don't think I want to go with red centers that match the factory paint. I think I need to spend some time on the internet to see what's current. |

Few little details to note. On these 19", the valve stem is through one of the hardware holes. On other Hamann's, I've seen it through the barrels. Not as neat (I think) as done on this set of 19".
I was pretty happy to see (visually) that this set doesn't look to be too damaged. Mind you we will not know 100% until they are thoroughly checked over. But as a starting point for a used set of wheels, I think I should be in good shape. And look at those treads. Completely bald. Ouch........ Note the junk on the roof. All bits from the trunk. And that's a 5-series trunk hood liner I got for $10 with the tool holder (unfortunately no tools though). As this Z4 is being overhauled for audio, the trunk is going through a complete gut and refinishing. Looking to try and incorporate that drop down tool set in the BMW factory spot on the trunk hood. Stay tuned!! But that will be another thread. |

this set was a great find! well done
very excited to see the final reveal as for refinishing, it's your flavor to use here. if they were mine, i'd paint the centers the same as the factory 224's. one of the nicest silvers on an OEM wheel imo, and the color matches the headlamp buckets perfectly. i do agree with you on the polished barrels, though i do like the brushed look as well. so many options!!! looking forward to seeing what you come up with

The OEM silver is super nice I agree. Thinking of some other options as well such as gunmetal or some sort of satin grey-ish tone. Satin colors have a way with making brake dust fade away!!

^ Interesting. It has crossed my mind to do something a little different with the barrels. There's a lot of satin chrome ideas bouncing around inside my head too for these barrels.

Sweet find!!
I'm with everyone here: your wheels, your cup of tea. Personally, I might mock up (someone mentioned PHotoshop) body-matching red centers just to see what it'd look like. I think it would give them some 'pop' without being brash. The refurb can't be cheap but what a set of wheels you'll have! Congrats. |

Thanks. Super excited to see how this all turns out. But with winter upon us (snow up here on the DD this morning) looks like we're closing Zee things down until spring. So I'll get these refinished over the winter and see how it all turns out come the spring of 2017.

Little update......... no exciting pictures of everything done..... sorry.
Going to be a bit longer. Re-furb guy finally realized he actually didn't have the OZ tool necessary to take these babies apart. So that tool is on order and will have to wait now. I wasn't too happy about that as the tool is now going to be mine permanently. Maybe should start collecting OZ wheels so I can make use of it again!??!?? Apparently not to often a set of OZ wheels comes in to be separated for refurb. Oh well. What's another $100 and change in the grand scheme of things. The finish I decided is going back to the original OZ finish of silver with the polished lip. After much searching on the internet looking at red cars, that combination works nicely. Also a neutral finish in case I ever tire of these wheels and want to resell. Starting to now look around for rubber. I know PSS's are a popular go-to. I'm likely not tracking her. She's a cruising car that generally will only see good weather and spirited romantic (me and my coffee cup) back-road drives. So looking at other options. Lower on coilovers so I think rounded shoulders preferred. |
