Get a "puck" to fit the Z4's lift pads and a small scissors jack...both the pucks and the jacks can be found on eBay.

I've had good luck with the Harbor Freight low profile jack.
Also, there's good jack technique in this thread I don't jack using the pads, I follow the technique in the thread and jack using the diff support (first) and the front middle jack point (second).

If you were jacking to change a flat on the side of the road would you not use the jack pad location?

Tough to get the HF jack in the trunk with a spare.

In order to get down low enough you will need to use a scissors jack. The puck is a great idea if you can find one that fits the jack. You may want to measure how low the jack need to go before buying one. I got lucky as my Dad had one in his garage that was out of a 70/80's Ford Tempo. It needed to be brought all the way down but fit under the car.

Ah geez...sorry about that. In my haste, I missed the spare tire part of that.
I'll leave the above post in case it's helpful, but it's not a great option for the side of the road.

Thanks to all that replied. I decided to go with a scissor jack and pad. Safety first and only if stuck on the side of the road. If I can nurse it back home to my garage and fix it there would be a better and safer option.

Get yourself a small Gardener's trowel to go with it as well....
Given how low the car is you will might need to dig a small depression for the jack to fit under the jack pad...

When we were on our Blue Ridge trip I packed a breakdown kit in the trunk
1)Swing bar with 17mm socket 2)Scissor jack 3)Small portable compressor 4)Tire repair kit with plugs 5)Bottle of slime (last resort) 6)1lt of Motul 10w60 The car also has the standard mobility kit in the trunk. Of course we are members of CAA/AAA and would call for assistance but not all areas we travelled through had cell coverage. |

Screwing around with an adapter and scissor as pictured seems a bit risky. BMW makes a spare tire kit for a lot of its RFT cars and most cars use a version of the lifting block on the E85/86. The low-profile jack is pricey, but is very compact and fits the lifting block. It needs a ratcheting wrench with it:

I don’t actually keep a spare kit in the car but I’ve bookmarked this one just in case:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004PX8BC2..._g5RTEb50JV3NK No clue though if it’ll actually fit underneath. Luckily I don’t drive far with the Z and if I do, it’s usually to/from track where I know I’ll have some friends nearby. For home duty, I use an Arcan 3T from Costco. It’s low enough to get underneath the Z but goes up enough to work on my wife’s X3. They go on sale every once in a while but I think I got mine for $99 (currently $120). FWIW unless you can get a really long one that reaches the center jack point underneath the car, I don’t think it’s worth paying a huge premium other than weight if you plan on lugging it to the track. |
