Well shoot. We skipped the tour when we were in Paris. The lines were long so we went a got some drinks instead. Probably should have gone inside. Come to think of it, we also skipped the Duomo and the Sagrada Familia, both because the lines were long, both involved us going to get drinks instead. I guess you could sum up our vacationing as "We tried God, but we don't like lines and we really like booze."

Thought about going to France some years back but decided against it. I might go one day to visit the Cemetary at Normandy but the country has little to offer me. I dont need to deal with snobby frogs who disdain Americans.

I'm saddened what happened to Notre Dame though. I bet it was a construction accident but if not I hope they figure out who and why and go after them with absolute vengeance.

Wow, thankfully I was wrong as usual. I thought for sure the place was a total loss along with everything inside it. Obviously they're looking at perhaps a decade or more of rebuilding, but all of the priceless artifacts and the stained glass made it apparently. What a relief.

I just don't understand how an accident like this could happen in the first place, it's just absolutely unacceptable.

Not sure about a miracle

The melting point of gold is 1064 C and a wood burning fire gets up to about 600 C.. but a powerful image nonetheless.

Jesus is Lord.

Hmmm. Lets brainstorm here. A remotely controlled drone carrying a violently reactive chemical as a payload is flown through a window on the spire..... or a construction accident.

I have worked on boats where in the hull if any sign of fire is detected then that area gets flooded in co2 or some other inert gas irregardless of who is alive in that area.

Thats on a smallish passenger ferry. I wonder what safety measures were at play in that spire? Its Notre Dame. I cant see it. All day today was there any word from the work crews? Anything?

A lot more survived than I would have thought - the organ, the stained glass and a good proportion of the artwork. It will all be damaged and need a lot of work.

The perverse part of all this is they couldn't get much money at all for maintenance over the years, but now money is pouring in. There are so many beautiful gothic churches in France. Maybe this will spur a renewed interest in keeping them maintained.

earlier on the tube they were talking about the symbolic copper rooster on top of spire which came crashing down in flames, it survived also.

Yeah, apparently none.

That's what happens when you let the french rule France. It wouldn't have happened under a German regime

The Europeans are strange when it comes to buildings, they'll rebuild it then act as if it's never been rebuilt. I don't know how many times I heard lines like this when talking about important monuments: "This building is 4,000 years old. It was burned to the ground in 1958 and the locals all got together to rebuild it".

Anyway, thinly veiled swipes at other cultures aside; Taxpayers generally don't like spending huge amounts of their dollars upgrading ancient landmarks, so monuments like this are funded similarly to your suburban church or public school.

France is installing integrated sprinkler systems in lots of their important wooden buildings, and re-painting the wooden structures in fireproof paint; but they hadn't really got to the Notre Dame yet.

... and (back to the thinly veiled swipes) if you've ever stayed in a hotel in Paris, you can understand why they don't have great firefighting gear - if anything burns it's a blessing in disguise and they're far better off just preventing the fire from spreading and re-building from scratch using dimensions that suit normal human beings (ie. with 800mm wide doorways and 2400mm height ceilings).

Construction fires happen all the time. Lots of temporary electrical systems, hot work, etc. Old structures like this are grandfathered in and can get around requirements to comply with modern fire codes. And with an 800 year old, dried out wood structure, this isn't that surprising. Charred remains can be analyzed for accelerants to see if arson was a factor, and I don't doubt they'll look into that, but there's no sense in buying into these theories unless fire investigators start talking about arson as a potential cause.

Did anyone catch the live stream on Youtube before comments were disabled? Bots were out in full force from the beginning, spreading garbage about muslims being responsible. Don't buy into this crap, we're smarter than that.

The fortunate part is that nobody was hurt.

It's so sad to see this. I love that building and it has such a unique place emotionally for France and such a unique place geographically in Paris. It's so unforgettable. so many places in Europe that's famous are ruined and rebuilt so I'm sure it's going to come out really nice when it's repaired

It's so sad so many screw ups blamed muslims for this. I think society is so screwed up right now when they are hoping for a bad guy so they can start a fight. I think if it was an attack conservatives would be so happy so they could blame muslims. They don't care about the beauty and majesty of that building.

They really think muslims are evil and drink blood. I think a lot of big wars in history all started with these crazy attitudes so I'm so scared we are headed for some really bad war in the future since half the crazy conservatives here are hoping for bad events like this.

Crazy world
