BMW Z4 M Brake Cooling Kit

The kit is finally done! This kit replaces the non functional OEM brake cooling ducts and it uses the same mounting points. Horn relocation/rotation is needed to fit this kit.
The kit includes brake cooling ducts for the front bumper, brake shields, funnels for the brake shields, brackets and wheel well block off plates. All laser cut metal pieces are not painted! 3" fittings, hose and hardware are NOT included in this kit. Minor modifications to the brackets might be needed.

"MOTK made me aware that there's an OE block off cover for the wheel arches (From the 3.0 Z4) you can buy for cheap. However I will still include the block off plate if you want it. The OE one in plastic cost around 5-6$ each side.

The picture only shows the parts for the passenger side. But don't worry, driver side parts will be included as well!

Parts will be printed once payment is made, preferably via PayPal "as transfer to friend/family" (Additional buyers protection fee of 3% is paid by the buyer if the buyer wants that). If you pay in another currency except US Dollars (or SEK) I'd prefer if you make the payment in SEK (Swedish Currency) to avoid double exchange fees.

As an option a mesh insert can be bought for the front bumper ducts to prevent stones and such to get into the hose, this option is an additional 20$.

As of 13th of november 2019 the shipping cost (max 3 kg) to the US is 48$, Canada 48$ and 36$ to the UK.

I will also sell you half a kit also! Either 110$ for backing plates with funnels or 215$ for front bumper cooling ducts with brackets and block off plates.

Will you include any instructions for installation? I'm a bit daft with a wrench, but can read and - preferably - interpret pictures

Do the hubs need to come off to mount those brackets? It looks like these would just bolt into the caliper mounting brackets, so I am assuming not, but want to check.

I have an AP Racing BBK, about the same size as a Brembo or Stoptech kit. Do you think the bracket will fit?

What 3" hose hardware is needed? Just the hose and hose clamps? Would something like this hose work:

brake cooling ducts

the components look great! would you have any pics of these installed with the front wheels are full lock? I am curious of the clearance inside the suspension to the wheels before committing to an order

Been waiting for this for a while, great news!! I'm in, but also have a few questions I sent to Andre via pm, perhaps it's easier for everyone if he answers them all here and the others on this thread. Like eggman I also have the AP kit with the 32mm disc, which can cause issues even with the standard backing plate around the knuckle area.

What additional fixings are needed?
What are the 2 brackets on the floor for?
Does the backing plate cover the steering knuckle area?
What length of hose would you recommend?
Is there much advantage to having the pieces printed in CFRP? (I've measured my discs at around 600c)

I have only test fitted the passenger side on my car, but haven't made any instructions. However it's very straight forward. The wheel well liner at the front bumper have to come off and folded to the side, it's tight but the rest is easy.

If you want to remove your OEM brake shields in one piece you'll have to remove the hubs. My brake shields are designed so that's not needed and they use the OEM mounting points for the brake shield.

The brake shields are made for the OEM 345 mm rotors, but slightly bigger rotors won't be a problem. Not even on smaller rotors, I run this kit on my Z3 Coupe race car.

You just need 3" hose ans 3" hose clamps, the hose you've been looking at looks like a good option.

Sorry, but I don't have a picture of that since I'm keeping my car "stock". I did this for the community as I know how hard it is modifying a car that's not that common. I guess any clearing issue depends on how you route your hose.

I answered the PM as well, but I'll post it here also so everyone can see.

"You will need hose clamps, hose, some bolts/nuts/shims and a few screws. Just some regular stuff.

The 2 metal pieces on the floor is for mounting the front bumper ducts to the OEM mounting points.

The bracking plate covers the steering knuckles, that's why they look the way they do. But at the same time I have cut away as much material as I can to keep them light.

I haven't mounted this kit on my own car, but on my Z3 coupe I needed a little over 2 meters. I would buy 3 meter to be safe.

The CFRP is 20% stiffer according to the manufacturer, so it can be made lighter and be just as strong as the other plastic I use. But no, CFRP is not needed. Temperature vise it's not much of a difference.

Minor modifications is for the brackets that come with the kit. I'm almost 100% sure you won't need to modify them. But see it as a disclaimer to avoid unsatisfied customers."

Subscribed! This is the first I've noticed this. Fantastic work! I'd really love to see a photo or two of an installed kit to get a feel for what I'd getting into. Even if it's shots of the Z3.

Likewise.
I'm sure Westersund is more qualified to answer this than I, but at the worst the different dimensions of the bbk calipers will require a snip of the shield (it's of course the same kind of snip that is required with the oe ones to fit a bbk caliper).

As a general question... There are different temp ratings for the duct hose. Given I track the car fairly regularly and am heavy on brakes with a BBK, which temp spec would be needed:
275 F
300 F
550 F

The costs go up appreciably, so I don't want to buy anything unnecessary. Plus I would prefer the optics of a black hose, but not if it's going to be problematic. I did read that the 550 F hose should be used for a track car.

As a kit specific question... I am not sure I understand the hose routing. When I look inside the wheel well, I don't see how hose can run from the stock air duct to the inside edge of the brake disc without interfering with the tires. How is the hose routed?

How do I go about ordering? Send you a PM?

I believe they will, the brake shields themselves bolt straight into the OEM bolt holes. However I've made the brake shields as small/light as possible but with enough material left to cover the steering knuckle to keep the rubber from melting. I don't think any material have to be trimmed in order to fit a BBK, there's hardly any material at all on that side of the brake shield for that reason.

Don't worry about the hose, it won't melt even with the cheapest one. Durability though...

The hose routing will require cutting away some plastic at the front bumper, you'll see once you remove/fold away the wheel well liner. I route my hose on along the control arm, but each to their own.

Some pictures, note that I have the first version of the brake shield (simpler design) on my Z3 Coupe, haven't swapped it out for the latest version (the one in this thread) yet. I'm runing a 3" hose but will be changing to a 2", but with the size of the Z4 ducts a 2" hose makes no sense. But there's more space in the wheel well of the Z4 than the Z3 IMO. My tire will rubb on the hose slightly at full lock in the pits, but never on track.

Well I've ordered
Will post up pictures of the install for those interested, I hope to do it on Aug 1st. Have a track day on the 5th so will update with disc temp readings, hoping to be nowhere near the 600c I'm reaching now which is causing the discs some problems.. I've cracked 2 sets of AP (356x32mm) in 3 years, so $300 for this is cheap if it helps as I think it will.
