I think both of the styles look good! CF is out of my range, though. I have the wood trim, so I don't think the graphite would coordinate well either. I would hate to replace the stock ones and have this happen again. Would either of the guys who did the plastic dip stuff be willing to post a picture? Thanks!

have you heard of HYDROGRAPHICS? its that process where they can dip your part into a water tank with a graphic image on the surface etc - basically with a smooth surface to your wheel inserts you could get wood, gloss black, CF, whatever youwanted - you can even use your own graphic! really cool. Even seen alloys dipped in this way. Might be another option... hmmmm

I got sick of waiting too.
Had mine at my local panel shop sprayed in black 2pac, been like this for over 5 years now with no visible wear, it is extremely durable! I think it cost me a couple of hundred bucks to prep and spray everything but it was well worth it as it will outlast the factory finish. You could even get it done the same as your body color if it is to your taste.

For anyone that has removed the trim without removing the airbag, were the steering wheel controls connected to anything when the trim pieces came off? Or did they freely come away.

If I remember correctly, you have to remove the airbag to get to the connectors to remove the button controls. Airbag is rather easy to remove, I was surprised at how easy. Just be sure to unplug your battery.

Here's the before and after on my steering wheel spokes. I scrapped off the degraded coating with my fingernails and a wet scotch brite pad, leaving the glossy black plastic. I liked that look, so I simply left it at that and remounted them.
I did have to replace the button group on the left, as the underlying plastic was white. That and someone looked to have touched it up with some black enamel brush on paint (a pretty poor job at that). The one on the right has just had the coating cleaned off of it. I popped out the air bag, but did not disconnect it. That gave me access to remove and reinstall those pieces. I did, though, disconnect the battery. For the driver's side window button switch cover, I did end up painting it, as it was a bit scratched up. A previous owner probably had long fingernails. I cleaned off the coating as with the steering wheel pieces, fine sand with 600 grit wet/dry paper, paint with Dupli-Color paint+primer, then coat with a matte UV resistant clear coat. The Dupli-Color paint+primer indicates that it is formulated for plastics adhesion.

Looks really good. In all seriousness, would you mind elaborating on the exact method of rubbing? Did you use your fingernail to sort of push the coating off the plastic of just pressure of your finger underneath the cloth? Did you have to touch up the plastic in any way after you were done?

Mine look like ShawnPaul's now. Several hours of elbow grease using a microfiber towel doused in Simple Green did the trick. Very happy with the result.

cheaper option.
i used 3m 1080 carbon fiber wrap, was very easy as you can use a hair dryer to mold it easily, amazon sells it for like $11 for 2 sq ft
will post pics i sprayed the buttons with clear coat to make them shine, looks great... |

I did the removal, sand and spray. Didn't touch the airbag. It was a pain to get the pieces off, sand them and spray them. I cracked a few of the narrow parts and had to glue/sand them. Probably better to just do the rub method and leave them on.
Turned out well though.
