Shift knob and leather repair kit
Hi again,
I need to purchase a new shift knob for my Z4 as the one on my car is slightly rubbed out along the outer edge (looks like the previous driver wore a ring). Is it hard to replace it? Is is simply a twist and pull and are there any wires I should be worried about? Also, the drivers left side bolster is rubbed out and showing cracks in a small area from years of getting in and out of the car and I am wondering if there is a kit I can buy so I can repair this. Thanks Lisa |

Manual or automatic transmission?

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Simply pull straight up to remove shift knob - no twist. Can take quite a bit of force, be careful not to pop yourself in the face when it breaks free. New one goes on much easier, just smack down on it and it's done.
As for the bolster, I'd take it to an auto upholstery shop and let them work their magic. Shouldn't be too expensive and they can probably make it look a lot better. Good luck!

If you are going to replace the knob with a new one, you can twist it first, which breaks the plastic tab inside the knob. Then it comes off very easy. |

Shifters and boots are super easy to replace. As far as the bolster, there is a cheap trick for old leather. You've basically lost the top layer so now all you are seeing is that greenish leather fiber, so it sticks out. Using a fabric marker, draw within the cracks of the leather and quickly wipe away any residue. It will make the cracks less visible, especially on black leather.

Received my OEM shift knob and replaced it easily. Also had the leather repaired by a mobile leather repair shop and it looks like new.
Thanks for all of your help! Lisa |

That's awesome! Do you have a before and after per chance? I was looking into this myself. Also was it expensive?
