Hydraulic steering rocks!

I've got a new X 3 M40i for daily duties and after renewing my spring/summer frolics in my Z4M coupe I have to say the steering feel in this car is far superior ! Heft , feel, on centre, everywhere. Some things were better in the "old" days!

I 100% agree. I just upgraded from a 3.0 to an M recently and I gotta say, this simple 'downgrade' from electric to hydraulic makes the Z feel more connected to the road.

Highway driving seems to be easier as well, less micromovements needed to keep the car straight!

Ironically I've heard the steering feel in the Z4M also criticized as not being BMW's best either. If thats true sad that it still beats their newer EPS. I have no complaints with the Z4M's but I would say "feel" might be better in the E8x and E9x racks but the weighting in the Z4M is perfect and turn in speed and precision feels good in my hands.

In comparison the 991.1 Porsche EPS is not that far behind and I don't have complaints with it either. Head the P racks have only gotten better since. At low, low speeds especially on slippery surfaces it feels unnatural and synthetic whereas the BMW hydraulics remain consistent but not the end of the world.

Disliked the EPS on the 2 series, 3 series and to a lesser extent the M2.

Now for the good news: drove the new Z4 30i and the steering was almost as good with the Z4M's and best BMW EPS I had driven to date. So there's hope yet; especially if the 40i gets a manual in North America

I remember some knocks on the Z4M steering when the car came out, but could never understand the bad press. I've also owned an E46 ZHP coupe, which has one of the best steering racks BMW ever, and I'd consider it on par with the Z4M, not superior.

The electric-assist steering in my Golf R is quite precise, behaves well on-center, and has a progressive ratio, which is really cool - but still has zero road feel.

I would be running to the dealership demanding them to TAKE MY MONEY!

I highly doubt this will be the case... seems like porsche (among a few others) is the only co still pushing manuals in their 2020 line and even THEN it's almost impossible to find

There's talk the shared platform Supra may get a manual...maybe if that happens it'll trickle down (up?) to the Z4...

Agreed! The X3 M40i is a blast though, has more of a true M character than the F80 M3 and F10 M5!
