The Yamazaki is much fuller bodied, much more malt forward, less floral and almost hoppy, which is more how I see the Toki.

I really enjoy Yamazaki in isolation but made the mistake of switching from it to Highland Park 12 the last time I had it and it just didn't hold up to such a staple.

Nope, saying the HP is much better and about half the price these days. I bought my Yamazaki many years ago for about $50, now it seems to be more than double that. I wouldn't recommend it at current prices and probably wouldn't at the old price. It's good, but so are many similar priced Scotches.

Tennessee makes whiskey? I work in Kentucky a few times a year, I won't share that knowledge with them.

I enjoyed my Yamazaki, quite a bit. I probably didn't sound like it above. It's a super approachable whiskey. I just tend to prefer dumb flavors like brine and iodine, so gravitate towards Oban, Laphroig and Talisker more than the Macs.

All this talk of Japanese liquor and what a coincidence, I just received this set yesterday as a gift. One of my colleagues brought it back from a trip to Okinawa. I haven’t ever had it but I hear good things about it.

Is the Mid Summer Solstice noticeably different than the regular? I'm a fan of Martin Miller over the regular but may have to check this out.

Yes it is. It has the same backbone but it is quite a bit more floral IMO. The other special release, the Orbium is also good but it has more of a hint of wormwood and seems a lot less floral to me.

For those of you that are saying JW Blue is the best, really need to try some more stuff. I have had Blue a few times and I would say it is mediocre at best, especially for the price point.

Awesome, thank you. I love absinthe, from when I worked in Germany years ago and drank all I could because it was still illegal in the US, so I'll try both. I've been on a St George kick for gin, but time for a change.

Oh, and absolutely agree on all things JW, not impressed. I'd say blends in general, but my dad has a bottle of Dewars 30 that prevents that blanket assessment.

It is a very flavorful and aromatic spirit. Every gin fan should try.

A few years back, BILIL and I shared some zinfandel/port after a nice dinner for my wife. It was excellent! But I've gone back to the winery where we ate and they look at me like I've already been drinking and have no idea what I'm talking about. Anyone can point me in a direction?
