This is great - thank you for posting this.
I love Ander's wild hand gestures....this contributes to the design

Hadn't seen that yet, very cool! Here's a look at the factory in 2003... "Bubba Makes Wheels" as they call it down there...

National Geographic seems to no longer have it on their site but here's their teaser on youtube.
I had posted the full 50 minute video link a long time ago on the z4-forum but clicking it now it's a dead link on their site |

Ugh those goofy giant wheels. Fantasy then, reality now which is worse. Ride quality loses potholes win.
Thanks for all the video links! |

So back when the E85 was introduced, I had a very close friend "Jack" (still do), car geek like me, who worked at Oracle. If you remember back in the early 2000's Oracle and BMW teamed up for the America's Cup yacht race. So my buddy sent me a reprised copy of an internal Oracle email from the OracleMan himself, Larry Ellison. The email was about the just-then released E85 and how such a design epiphany it was. Jack and I thought different. I still think the ducktail on the rear deck looks like ass (no offense to any E85 owners). And I wasn't a fan of the front end nor the Frankenstein blinker/Roundels on the fenders. (Keep in mind I think the E86 looks fantastic and I own one...).
I quipped back to Jack that the E85 design brought back memories of when the teachers at school would put down the vomit-cat litter when a kid threw up in grade school. Jack and I attended the same school. Well unbeknown to me, the email I replied to was the ACTUAL original email from Ellison; Jack had sent me the original email as an attachment to his email and I did not realize it. I opened the attachment and replied to Ellison's email when I thought I was replying to just Jack. Not 15 minutes after sending my reply to, ahem, "Larry E.", my phone rings; it was Oracle IT Security asking who I knew at Oracle who sent me the "for internal distribution only" company-wide email from the CEO. OH HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!! Man, did I not have nice thinks written about Oracle and BMW and the America Cup team-up. HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!! The Oracle folks threatened to get my company's president involved if I didn't fess up; I figured they knew anyway, and maybe Jack was effing with me... So I called Jack ASAP. OH HOLY SHITTTTT!!!!!!!!!! he wasn't messing with me. Not a good day for our friendship needless to say. Jack and I laugh about it now some 20 years post the event. I was seriously puckered that day. Thought I'd share.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
