Muffler Delete/Straight Pipes?

I test drove an Z4MC this past weekend. The mufflers had been taken off. The sound was VERY nice, and I didn't feel any loss in performance, as a matter of fact it felt very strong (had 101,000 miles on it). Just wondering, is that just a simple modification where you take out the mufflers and weld pipes straight through? Does it have any effect on emissions? Once again, I really liked the sound!

I tried searching but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, and I apologize for my ignorance on the subject.

no its probably just a muffler delete, anything more and it would of been crazy loud.

Yes. To answer your earlier question, emissions aren't effected at all with this method.

I guess that's a way to do it but we can't really tell you how it was done without a picture.

there are several members here that have gutted the OE mufflers and welded a pipe inside.

I fired mine up with mufflers off once to see how it sounded. Buy a set or rpi mufflers and you will be extremely happy. Same sound but more refined and crisp.

The owner described it as just removing the muffler, so I'm sure that's all it was. Like I said, the sound was great. Thanks for the input, guys.

Check out Rogue Diablos too. They are about 75% of the volume with the less desirable sounds filtered out. It's the most powerful sounding exhaust IMHO.

A muffler delete is exactly that. Removing the stock muffler and putting in two straight pipes. I had a muffler delete on my old car and it is not the loudest by far. RPi's would be louder in my opinion from watching youtube videos/experience. A muffler delete would run you about $150 max at a exhaust shop, while RPi's are $800 uninstalled. A muffler delete is a very cheap way to get a great sound out of the engine because these BMW engines sound amazing on their own.

What he said. RPIs are LOUD and look great. There isn't really much sound deadening built into them either. But like Exist said, it would be cheaper to have an exhaust shop weld up some pipes after removing the stock mufflers.

It won't effect emissions as far as what gases the car is spitting out, but check local laws for exhuast modifications because the sound might be too loud.

I hope you are right, just ordered a pair.

From what people have said I don't think I will be disappointed as I like it loud.

Why is waiting for parts always the longest thing.

I have the RE midpipes and cans.
Yea, it's loud.
I was going to call dibs on Rated-M's RE x-pipe, but decided the current setup sounds great and is at the limit of "socially acceptable", even on the freeway.

Just got my RE Diablo's.

One is badly dented inside the shipping box.

Looks like one of the exhaust hangers smashed into the other muffler in transit.

If there was a sheet of 7mm plywood sandwiched between them then this could not have happened.

The packaging could be improved so easily, which would lessen DOA claims considerably thus improving their supply chain efficiency and increase competitive advantage.

I hope Rogue will sort this out.

Sorry to hear the piping was dented. I really get annoyed at inadequate shipping protection. UPS/FedEx consistently destroys boxes so you really have to package items REALLY WELL knowing they are gonna be manhandled.

Thanks for the sympathy vote guys.

I have euro headers, I like loud but not really raspy so I will leave the x-pipe stock.

Actually the shipping box was perfect and not torn or damaged in any way.

It is a genuine R/E box with their packing tape sealing everything up so I know the responsibility is on them to get the internal packing up to the job as they can so easily be dented if not shipped carefully.

There was bubble wrap around everything and I didn't even know something was wrong until I took all the bubble wrapping off.

I bought them from iND Distribution who really looked after me and I do not blame them but just the way RE package their mufflers could really be improved upon.

I will let you know when I finlly get a resolution to the problem hopefully not too long, as now the waiting has started all over again.

Yes it sounds raspy from the video, but that's because it's not completely warm. It also sounds WAY different in person. When it's cold the idle is pretty loud and the rasp comes above 4.5k RPM. When it's warm, zero rasp.

An exhaust system like this isn't for everyone however. It has a lot of drone and could get annoying on highway cruising. Personally, I don't mind any of that. I absolutely love my exhaust and will do this all over again (which I have to because of a ticket I recently got for my exhaust lol).

Got a pair of eBay staggered tips and paid $100 for installation and pocketed the $700 I could've spent on RPI.

Did you add any resonators of just pipe and tips? I am thinking of doing a muffler delete and adding resonators to see how it sounds before buying an RPI exhaust...

It's just pipe and tips. Still has the OEM cats and resonators, just no muffler.

I believe it's ideal to squeeze a set of universal mufflers between that. I say squeeze because the space between the tips and the bolts that connect to the rest of the pipe are very limited. So be careful in your muffler choice.

Since my referee inspection is this Wednesday, I plan on doing the same thing after the inspection. I'm getting a set of Magnaflows that same day and installing it. Life is just too boring with these stock mufflers.

If you want I can post another video with the Magnaflows? But I'd suggest you hear different setups in person before you make a final decision.
