2h🚨 BREAKING: FIA to ENFORCE STRICTER engine compression ratio tests from June 2026.

New rules require compliance at HIGH TEMPERATURES, targeting allegations Mercedes' design exceeds the 16:1 limit when hot.

Mercedes DENIES the claims. The change aims to CLOSE a technical loophole and ensure a level playing field.

As I said before who was stupid enough not to see this was an issue. Anyone who has performed a leak down test knows temp is critical for accuracy.

Say it's true Merc has variable compression. Are they allowed to make changes to the engine post June 2026? If not, can they still do it and get away with it?

2026 Formula 1 engines are subject to strict homologation rules where power units are sealed by the FIA to prevent illegal, in-season modifications. Manufacturers must submit their final, detailed technical dossiers by March 1, 2026, locking in their designs to control development costs and ensure fair competition.

So break the seal go to FIA Jail.

While Merc say they're already in compliance, here's the scenario if indeed change is needed:
"One thing is certain: the early-June date is not random. Initially it seemed the measure would come into force in August, not at the start of summer. Why? The answer is simple: we must link the measure to the calendar. Teams have three power units for 24 Grands Prix, so each unit should theoretically last eight events."
"And which would be the eighth race? The Monaco Grand Prix, scheduled for June 7. Mercedes, therefore, if it has to intervene on the V6, could introduce modifications on the second engine, which would be introduced around then providing reliability is up to scratch."

3798j, well reasoned but .....
Based on 2025 data IMO it is very unlikely all teams will not make to June on one ICE unit.
https://www.f1-fansite.com/2025-form...nts-gearboxes/

Since Mercedes is confident that their ICE is compliant I guess there is no issue. Now a sticky wicket, engines in service will have higher leak downs based on hours and conditions. IMO the only way this test is valid is fresh off the dyno and compression test and seal. In season this becomes problematic.

Glad I can just arm chair quarterback this mess.

But how can they modify the engine if it is already sealed, as Car-Addicted says?

The "sealed engine" rule won't come into play because of the FIA's change in testing compliance. With new testing rules, Merc will be allowed alter its engines (if needed). Picture a field of only 14 cars if cars using Merc PU's weren't allowed to take the grid.

I'm probably slow here, but to be clear: Mercedes and all the other engine manufacturers will be allowed to break the seals because of this rule change?

Teams can perform the same compression test as the FIA. If a manufacturer finds their PU will pass the new "hot" rule...they'll do nothing.
