Unhappy SMG gears grinding from 1st to 2nd

Hey guys, I just bought my '04 3.0I w/SMG a week ago. I have a third party company offering a comprehensive warrenty, thankfully as I think I'll be needing their services quite soon.

Twice the gears grinded from manually shifting from 1st to 2nd today. First time it did this since I bought the car. Both times were half an hour apart from each other today.

Is this a known problem? what do I do know?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I do just out of habit from shifting with a manual. Perhaps I slipped up and kept the gas when it was shifting? is that what causes this?

It has 80,700 km's on it as of today.

I've never had anything I could call "grinding" of gears. At low RPMs it might be slow, and at high RPMs I could call the change "hard" but not grinding.

Come to think of it, has there ever yet been a post of a Z4 SMG getting any clutch / gear replacement?

^ Yeah I was really wondering how that would work with the SMG.

Just a quick question. The dealership I got this car from, said that the people that dont drive these cars hard: are hit with the problems typically.

I have a REALLY hard time justifying bagging the snot out of this car to myself, but is that the answer?

I dont push it on rough cloverleafs, but is it a good idea to push it too 4k and over to shift etc. ? Judging by the posts, and what I've read: the more I rag on the engine the better.
Both of these grinding incidents were when the revs were below 3500 while shifting in slow traffic.

Didn't GP20 have the lemon tho?

Graham, I'd go ahead and let the revs fly a little more. Seeing as my last car was an autotragic, I had to remind myself that revving it over 3k was "ok" too, but now I have no problems letting it get up to 4/5/6k before a shift. Even to redline on the rare occasion. I'm not talking about racing stoplight to stoplight here, but if you want to let it loose for the on-ramp 1/4 mile theres no reason not to. All this and I've manage to get an unreal 29 MPG on my MID for the last few tanks thanks to a fair mix of highway driving. (Actual MPG calculated closer to 27 MPG, but still dang good!)

But back to the original topic... I've grinded a gear or three in my life, but never felt that sensation in this car. (or any of the several SMGs I test drove)
