Hopefully this is not a dumb suggestion but if the problems persist, is there a good reputable BMW dealer in your area that could look into this for you without charging a crazy price? If you have such a dealer with a mechanic who has been wrenching on BMWs and N52s for years, he may spot the problem very quickly and save you a lot of anguish and worry.

I wish cars would still have tb cables
I might get a smoke test done too, will look into this. Thanks for your reply!

The BMW shop I use has been around for ever, the owner even tried to figure it out. There is one more place to try but since I'm already at about 1,500 into this with out any improvements at all I'm getting a little gun shy.

Have they checked the DISA valves? The n52 has 2, one for high rpm and one for low and i thought 3k was the change over from the low rpm DISA. They are common failure points, either in the motor or actual flaps.

^whs.... my car was running rough and head check engine light that would pop on and off and have similar symptoms to what your describing...both flaps of disa were wedge just before the valves and kind of blocking air passage

*UPDATE* Bought gas tonight when on the fuel light and afterwards the issue seems to be gone. Did a few hiccups right after fueling but then stopped. Drove approx 40 miles hard and didn't have a problem. Also seems to idle better. I've put about 1 1/2 tanks of fuel in it since I purchased the car. So now I'm wondering if the dealer used 87 or I managed to get a bad tank. I also put techron in the last tank before today's. Will drive a few hundred miles this weekend to make sure the issue is gone. Thanks everyone, I'll report back!

I agree - hopefully it was just a bad tank of gas. Fingers crossed that the issue is resolved - you and the wife have had a stressful time with the car and you deserve to have that end so you can enjoy what should be a fine machine.

Keep us posted!

*UPDATE* Car is still broken. Started acting up after about 50 miles and after heavy throttle when pulling out. Also had the worst shift yet, makes a terrible wooouf sound while shifting in auto under moderate pedal. Starting to think maybe the torque converter? This is seriously driving me nuts!

Man, I feel your pain. If the independent shops aren’t fixing this, which seems to be the case, then it’s time to find a bona fide bmw dealer.

I think you're right. Hope it's just a coding issue and not the trans. If it is would a 6sp manual be a good swap that wouldn't totally kill the value of the car?

Let’s see what the dealer says first. It may very well be fixable as is. Fingers crossed!
