BMW quotes the 335i at less hp than the Z4M, but it actually rates higher on independent dynos, is what he's saying. It's still fairly close: the Z4M is 330hp, the 335i is ~340 and heavier. The N54's greatest advantage is low-end torque, the same advantage it has over the new M3's engine (414bhp, but about ~20lb-ft more than our S54s).

Car and Driver and Automobile magazine both dyno'ed 335s when the car was first released, as testers felt the power had been under-reported. Remember that when the first N54s were released, BMW was still unloading E46 M3s new on dealer lots. They wouldn't have made friends offering a newer, cheaper car with more power, so they under-reported the N54's output.

By a modded Z4M , do you mean throwing $7k at the car and getting 15rwhp? And boys and girls you might want to talk about torque, thats also at 300. A simple $350 chip and you will have 340rwhp and 370rwtq. Die hard NA guys,,,,,, thats all I can figure. I would love to see them drop the N54 in the next Z car. At another $15k less than your beloved Z4M........ Plus much better mpg........ Engine of the year.... O well, I will check it out if and when it hits market. All you M lovers can tell me how well they did the rearend of the N54 Z car. You will have a good enough view,, I will listen to your opinion. |

Has anyone heard or read anywhere yet if the 2009 Z4 will have the twin-turbo 3.0liter 6-cylinder engine?

Oh, boy. It looks like the Z forums will be inundated with the same sort of hopeless nimrods that worship the 335i. The N54 engine must come with some powerful Kool-Aid.

As a 335 owner myself, there's a particular draw to the s54...particularly the extra 1k revs and the more linear and responsive throttle.
In my opinion the ones that are diehard n54 supporters are pretty much number whores whose performance driving experience is limited to streetlight races. Not to say that the n54 is not a good engine...but the n54 is better suited for everyday driving while the s54 is better suited for having a good time. |

I own a Z4MC. I love the S54 engine and the instant response and would not want the N54 in the car. Having said that however the N54 is putting out about the same power as the S54. You only have to look at the performance numbers for both cars to see that the power is essentially the same. It is also much easier to get more power out of the N54. The S54 is basically maxed out unless you go with forced induction.

Your cost per mile "fun fact" is interesting and seems almost overwhelming. Knowing all of the parameters used in your configuration (ins., depreciation, etc.), what ratio does the ever increasing price of gas play? I realize that the M got stuck w/a gas guzzler tax in view of its MPG figures, so what else is boosting that cost/mile figure? Thanks!

Mr. Brown: with all due respect, the question of what engine BMW will put into the next generation Z4 is a fair and viable one given this forum. It is not a question of worshiping an engine, just wanting clarrification. To cast aspersions on those of us enjoying discussions as such is, well, you fill-in your own blank. As a former professional formula driver, and one who regularly enjoys ringing-out my Ducati 900SS, even at my tender age of 58, I can assure you that we are not all "nimrods". Chill.

I have a 335i Coupe (wife's) and bought an M Coupe because I knew it was the last of the S54s. I think the N54 is still too new to know how it will hold up long term, and the 250 degree normal oil temps may take some time to get used to (or some $$$ in the aftermarket).
