Here is a basic placement drawing of the louver and my reason for where I choose them to be there.

The pink is the air going thru the Louver and around the car, Not over the top.

The blue is the fast air.
The red is the slow air.

The black is a mathematical formula to find the perfect angle place arrangement for the louvers. (A friend mine helped me with that)

Is there a Barf emoticon on this forum? Here it is The Z4MC is one of the finest looking cars of our time... Why do some insist on Civic style upgrades?

Reminds me of the reference from Top Gear about how the Z4 M is Fred Flintstone's car:

As for the louvers, is there really any need for additional cooling? I've never seen the oil temp go over 225 or so even on the track. What's the performance benefit? The work seems to be well done, but I have to agree that they look kind of glued on and cheap.

^ I will be supercharging my car very soon with the VT 500, so any extra cooling will definitely be needed, and for that reason my headers will be also ceramic coated as well the supercharger intake tubes, and manifold.

crfine has said the car has zero cooling problems while on extended track periods. He only has the 450 kit or w/e. The 500 is intercooled which should make it more than likely cooler and more efficient than the 400...

Have you seen Palantirion's thread on the 'other' forum.
He's done some good heat reduction testing, channeling air out of the side marker roundel location.

Yes I fallow his thread as well, I should do something with the side markers but it will be more discreet then what he did, but I do like the idea tho.

Kudos for having the cahones to make your Z your own!! Does not matter if I like it or not - seems you have put some thought into the mod and it will fit / enhance future mods.

Yeah, to each their own. Not for everyone but I think when painted they'll look cool. It's an aggressive look and I think that as long as the rest of the car can match that aggression then it'll look great.

A cowled hood would do more for function than these vents. If you've got the balls to cut up the hood, then you also have the dinero to buy a new one. Try VIS for a carbon fiber one.

Resurrecting old thread. I'm in the process of researching/planning hood louvers for my 03 Z4 to add extra cooling capacity for my LS7/T56 swap.

Did you ever get them painted to match? How about a current shot? What vents did you use?

Ignoring all the comments about "how it looks"....

Some info:

I did a quick "air flow" test to find high/low pressure areas on the hood and found some interesting results. I used ribbon taped to the hood to make little streamers and went for a drive.

- Up to 50MPH all streamers will flat against the hood (except at the rear of the hood at the bast of the windshield...SUPER HIGH PRESSURE there).
- At about 50MPH, the streamers at the "curve" in the hood (where the hood transitions from the front "up slope" to the flat section started to flap (air starts to separate from the hood)
- As speed increases, this separation grows towards the rear of the hood by about a 1/4"-1/2" per 10mph. By 100mph a good 2" of the hood area behind the "curve" is separated from the skin of the hood (a good 1" off the skin of the hood).

So it seems (as I can see it) the ideal vent would need to be right behind this "curve"/"jump" in order to take advantage of the air current. The separated air should create a low pressure area on the skin/vent which would fill with high pressure air from under the hood/came through the radiator.

I found this:

Which shows a HUGE vent right where I'm talking about. SO it seems they have the same idea.

Thoughts?

Chris

It's the same premise, but check out and e86 race car rather than an e89 since they're two different cars. That will give you an exact placement for the vents.

its hard to design something that will not screw up the design of the M hood with its creases

Will do. I just grabbed the first thing I could find. Certainly need to do more research/planning before I'd ever consider cutting.

Personal preference on my part, but for our cars a duct/ducts look much better than louvers. If you're going for modding a factory hood, you'll be limited to the areas without the underlying brace structure which might seriously limit your shape, size, and placement. A CF hood would give you unlimited options and certainly increase cost. Good luck and please post your progress.
