Rear side window molding replacement
The bottom strip of the rubber surround is getting gummy on my 3.0 coupe, does anyone know how this is fitted? From looking at the diagram, it appears to come with the glass (part 4)

OTOH, the Z4 already shows issues with the 2 rear side windows as well as the windshield trim (cracks), and the cowl plastic has already been replaced once for warp. |

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I recently purchased an 08 coupe and I've noticed the same area gum up too. Any luck on anyone attempting a DIY on this or found an alternative to fix this area of the window?

I replaced my quarter glass a few months ago for the same reason; it comes as a unit with molding, you need to order the whole window; I had mine installed by an automotive glass shop since you always run a risk of leaks if you diy it and they guarantee the job; you need to cut the window out with a super-sharp blade very close to painted surfaces, you need to buy professional glass glue etc., too many things to worry about and too many liabilities for this little guy, paid $130 for glass delivered and $125 for install; not cheap for a piece of weathered rubber but then again your're looking at it everyday😶

Thanks for the insight. I figured as much, this will now be on my refurb list for this car. I get up to Sonoma now and then again for work, what was the shop you took it to if you dont mind me asking?

It's called Reliable Glass and they really are, they do work for local body shops; they are in Rohnert Park which is another 25 minutes northwest of Sonoma, or 15 if you own a car you do and have a good V1 on your windshield; their phone is 707-877-6978; also, the part #s for quarter glass you posted are correct, I got mine from Bmw of South Atlanta, lots of others wouldn't ship glass for some reason

Yes indeed, I'm sure human ingenuity will tackle this one at some point somewhere; in the meantime, however, any recycling ideas for the old window that's still perfect take away rubber?

Mine was like that and I was going to order both sides...but...
Before I did that I tried using WD-40 on them. Simply spray on the gummy part and rub with your index finger, don't rub it with rags as your finger will make sure it will be flat and smooth. You will notice it will start to dissolve the gummy layer only, Do this a few times till all the gummy part is dissolved. Simply clean area with soapy water and rinse then finish it off with your favorite protectant. Please try this first before spending money on replacements and let us know your results. Mine came out beautifully! Last edited by doozyj; 09-06-2014 at 03:33 PM.. |
