Best track tire/wheel combo
After 15 years of wheel to wheel racing(SE30 and SE46) Ive sold my race car and will be tracking for liesure my 2007 Z4MC which has big brakes, coilovers, fixed seats and harnesses and roll bar.
Currently it have Apex wheels with 265/40-18 rubber up front and 275/35-18 in the back. Looking for first hand experience with different "R' rated tires.

Yokohama AO52 is supposed to be the new hot "200TW but not really" tire - similar grip to Trofeo R, less sketchy in the wet, and it's on my radar unless I get another set of cheap Trofeos. |

Lot of the guys I track with run the Toyo R888R and like them. I run Hankook RS-4 they are just sticky summer tires not R compound.

Contributing mostly to subscribe to learn where this goes...
I am using Pilot Sport 4S. These seems like great road / track tires. I am thinking about running Cup 2 tires next year. I would do this with a dedicated set of track wheels, though I would still need to drive to and from the tracks. |

Coming from Spec E46 on Toyo's and will likely run Hoosiers. Was just curious what experience was here. After fender flares we are planning on 285's on 18s. Should have wild "stick" especially with some aero!

I have enjoyed RE-71s as a dual purpose autocross/track tire, especially since you can flip them to extend their life.
For R-Comp tires, a good friend runs the Maxxis RC-1 on his Z3M coupe for track. He said they are on par with Nt-01 and 888R in terms of grip, with the difference being the RC-1 have the shaved tire grip of the others immediately because they are smooth. Not as sticky as hoo hoos of course, but they sure as shit last forever. Bonus is they are CHEAP too, and if your an SCCA member they provide a 10% discount as well (talking UNDER $900 shipped for SCCA members for a set of 265/35/18s). I'm very strongly considering them for next year myself

I do 9-10 hpde events a year on R888R (295/265), you'll like those tires. They last me about 30-36 heat cycles with slow drop off in grip, work well in cold and hot weather, (36F up to 100F), and they are inexpensive. I run them at 25-26psi cold to 32psi hot. Not as fast as slicks, but great R-compound choice. Go Toyo RR if you want even more grip, but stiffer sidewall, may be sweet spot for you before going full slick.
If you're not doing competition, any reason to run slicks other than lap records? NT-01s and other Rs are comparable, it will come down to availability and tire size that you want in the end imho.

Retiring from racing but still have my Z4MC which is getting more racy. Just what grip that is more then I'm willing to push.

Kind of hijacking but I was to make basically the same post. Looking for a square set of 18”. What’s the widest tire on stock suspension?
I’m thinking a 18x8.5 should be good enough for a 235 tire front on a 40 offset but then it would be a waste to run a 235 on the back. |

RS-4 are 2 to 3 seconds slower than NT-01, but you get a lot more use. R888R found to last marginally longer than NT 01 with same lap times. Side note, I lent my buddy the Rs4s for track day on his F80 M3 and he said they were crap with the heavier car. Square 275s at the time.

None of these are race tires, they're all street legal, have super short tread life, but are still reasonably usable on street in rain. Until it's an actual race slick / race rain tire, as far as I can tell the 200 and lower treadwear rating tires are pure OEM marketing / autocross rule arbitrage - eg the Cup2R that has 4-5 hero laps and then turns into a normal Cup2 or RE71R that wears as if it's <50 TW.
Another tire to consider if you're consider R888R - Nankang AR1. No personal experience yet, but lots of rave reviews on the web / from regular trackrats. |

Another option to consider are the Goodyear Eagle Supercar 3R. I believe they were OE for the Camaro ZL1s.
Insane amounts of grip, best lap would be after warmup lap +- 2 laps before they start slowing down. However it's super consistent after. Did 4X 20-30 min sessions at Club Motorsports in Tamworth NH, and another full open lapping day at Palmer CW. Rotated the wheels left to right in between tracks. Tires were a beast and maintained grip throughout, even when it got to about 92 degrees ambient temp. The car was performing so well with these tires that I almost completed an hour session with 2 five minute pit ins to adjust my LapTimer. The fronts were completely corded after Palmer, but you could only tell by looking at them. The rears could probably do with one more day. Also these tires definitely look like they can do with more camber. I am currently at -3.2 fronts. |

Try the nankang ar1 or ad052.
They beat re71 and rrr hands down. Will also last about one day more. First day they are as grippy if not faster as Pirelli scrubs.

I've gone through several sets of Toyo R888s mounted on E46 M3 wheels. Recently switched to the Bridgestone R71R with good results.

Interesting, I can go a whole HPDE 'season' 10 events on one set of R888R and still have some tread left front and rear. How are you guys killing/cording tires in just one event? I must be driving like a old woman!
