How often do you change your airbox filter?

Was ordering some stuff from Tischer and thinking about getting a new filter for the stock air intake while I'm at it. My car has 17,7xx miles.

I see that the "recommended" replacement for this isn't until inspection II, which seems like an awfully long time to keep the same filter in.

I suppose I should probably just crack it open and see how dirty it is, but I'm wondering how often others here change theirs out.

I'm pretty sure mine hasn't been changed yet (18.7k miles), just inspected and shaken out.

I change mine every 15K miles. I know it's overkill but I feel better.

This reminds me that I need to change the air filter in my Jeep.

About 2x/year, or every 5000 miles.

i'm a bit embarrassed to be asking this question, but opening up the stock air box is as simple as unclasping the 4 metal hooks and cleaning the stock air filter that's sitting atop?

Yes, and I've found they don't really get that dirty. I vacuum out any leaves or other debris out of the box, knock off the dirt off the incoming side and put it back in. I usually get about 50k out of an air filter before it gets changed--which is consistent with BMW replacement guidelines.
