Yes, from a price point perspective, I expect it to be a "replacement" to fit in somewhere under the M3. Since discontinuing the Z4M, they have not had an M car at a price point below the M3.
Independent of price, absoultely not - not a two seater, still has the general "coupe/sedan" body shape that is ubiquitous in the auto industry, turbo charged engine, etc, etc. It's an apples to oranges comparison, so I just don't see "replacement" as even a relevant point. A replacement would be a new Z4M..... |

You are right about that. Fortunately transmissions can be rebuilt or replaced. There are some fairly high mileage Z4Ms out there now, over 50K miles, and I think the transmissions are still holding together though the synchros might be suffering. Careful shifting, matching RPMs, and in general not abusing the transmission can help a lot. I have heard of a product called Royal Purple Synchromax which is supposed to improve the shifting when it starts to get notchy.

While we got the M3 engine, we didn't get the M3 manual tranny. We got the regular Z4 tranny, which people are having 1-2 gear gringing issues with.

To resurrect this thread - I am reading the car will have the N55 motor, but with twin turbos(seems strange to go to twins when the N55 went to single from twin turbos...) and likely over 350hp. Starting to sound a little more intriguing to me especially since a cabrio version is planned.

It's got slits on the bumpers and looks cut up--- reminds me of a TVR sagaris. I think I'll like it, even though it doesn't appear to have the clean lines of the M3. I do like how they changed so many things with the 1-M over the regular 1er. Makes the Z4m seem like a less complete ///M job, cosmetically. We didn't get wider fenders or different side vents---still looks wonderful, but would have liked to have seen something new w/ our cars (a side vent on the crease for example).

apart from the unusual 1-series exterior styling, and a rather bland and straightforward interior that closely resembles the 3-series, i think the new 1m's lacking that special character that makes the z4m such a unique car. definitely not going to be a replacement, and perhaps a marginal success is in order, but will never be remembered like the z3m or z4m coupes.

I could only find the teaser video with one fender exposed and the rest of the car covered. If they do the car properly it will be an awesome ride that anyone would be proud to own. It will also have a fair bit of practicality although both the back seat and the trunk are considerably smaller than the E9X. The biggest problem that I see is a marketing issue similar to what Porsche had to face with the Cayman and the 911. The Cayman is a less expensive model so they had to give it less power and fewer amenities to avoid competing with themselves and stealing away 911 sales. BMW will have the same issue with the 1M and the M3.

1M is going to be another badass M car. The 135s look much better in person and with the flared fenders, front fascia, rear CSL type trunk, it will look very aggressive. LSD, improved suspension, bumped up hp, what really isn't to like. Would it replace my M coupe, possibly but not likely. I do also enjoy the rarity of the Z4M but would also enjoy the larger production 1M due to more aftermarket support. We'll see when it's released.

new info has transmission as 6-speed only + stock zcp wheels. i wonder why bmw didn't endow the z4m with csl or zcp wheels to begin with as well, even though i do love the oem five spokes.

Appearance: Not even close.
Performance: Could be, but too soon to tell.
