Braking shudder

Hi,

I am getting a shuddering sensation through the steering wheel when I apply moderate braking force. When I slam on brakes or when I gently brake there is no shudder.

What could be wrong and what do I need to do to mend it?

Do u track ur car and when is the last time u changed ur brake pad. Its very likely to be ur brake pad which could have worn out otherwise might be u got a warped rotor.

Have not tracked it yet but the warped motor sounds about right to me. Will get the dealer to check it out.

How many miles on the car? If the miles are low it could be an alignment issue.

currently 16 000kms. I got it with 6000km on the clock, so maybe there was some track time during the first 6000kms.

Did you just buy the car? It can be a lot of thing's depending on slight differences. Could be un-evenly worn tires to the already mentioned rotor warpage.

Get them hot and see if they start shuddering under hard braking.

Mostly good answers IMO but doubtful on the alignment. Failed front wheel bearing will also manifest itself in brake shudder, but my experience was at harder braking levels.

Having owned a Cooper S, that's what I would think. Not beefy brakes to begin with.

Whenever I've had runout on the rotors, the steering wheel will vibrate as well. The shudder can also be caused by a faulty brake booster.

Possibly unevenly deposited pad material. Happens when brakes are used lightly.
Try three in a row hard stops from 60 to 10 mph, that should clean the deposits off the rotor.
This is common, and is often blamed on warped rotors.
