Mystery - Carly finds a fault but no details

Anyone else seen anything like this? Carly finds a fault after running diagnostics but shows no detail or fault code? Can't clear the fault. Just recently had it happen on my 06 Z4MR. Wondering if there is any way to figure out what the fault is. Thanks.

That's pretty much normal for Carly, most of the codes have no explanation or they in german lang

That's just the thing. There is no code (even in german language) shown. Has anyone had something like that happen? If yes, what (if anything) did they do to figure out what the fault is?

There was a thread not long ago, but I can't find it.
I think this one got high honors:
https://www.amazon.com/Creator-Reade.../dp/B075STNXSJ

I have the Peake Research, and INPA/DIS for deep dives.

Bingo. A generic code reader can't access the extended set of codes that are BMW/Chassis specific

Thanks, StickMon. Is this the Peake Research scanner that you are referring to?

Yep. Bought it many years ago when I first got the car.
But if I was going to choose again, I would look into that Creator Reader.

The Peake gives you the 4 digit hex codes 2 digits at a time and then you have to look them up in the pamphlet or pdf.
The Creator may be just as good and would be easier to use. Plus it's cheaper.

Why not just get a version of INPA or ISTA-D? Then you can do everything regarding the diagnostic issues.
The obd2 cable for that is like 10 bucks delivered and the software is out there on the interwebs
Carly is a consumer tool. INPA/ISTA-D is a professional tool.

But having INPA or ISTA doesn't make you a good mechanic of course.

Thanks, StickMon. I'll try out the Creator and report back. Much obliged to you for pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks, GuidoK. Let me try out the scanner that StickMon recommended. My understanding is that INPA or ISTA-D require a PC running XP. I unfortunately do not have one at the moment, although I'm sure I can pick one up for a few bucks off Craigslist. Also, I may be wrong, but my understanding is that INPA and ISTA-D aren't intuitive - they may require a fair amount of learning to get the most out of them. So for the moment I'll hold off on those options and try out the Creator scanner and report back. Thanks.

Inpa works at least on windows 8 and I dont see why it wouldnt work on 10 and Ista D certainly works on win10.
They are indeed professional tools so there is a slight learning curve although Ista D is quite straight foreward I think). Installation of the programs is the most tricky bit but there are countless tutorials out there.

I was able to install and successfully use INPA.
But I'm a Telecomm Engineer for NASA.
I wouldn't wish it upon anyone who's not a PC expert.

Really?
I've been working with INPA for about 8 years and with ISTA-D for about 4 years and I'm certainly not a telecommunications engineer at NASA nor have I an educated background in computers.
Over the years the installation of INPA has become easier and easier when BMW standard tools came along imho.

For the rest its just a matter of following the tutorials and check what com port the adapter uses and check that thats the same in the ini file (and check that OBD is the designated protocol in the ini file). I'm sure every decent tutorial says that.
That doesnt sound so hard does it? If you install it for the first time its just a matter of taking your time, read through a good tutorial and follow the steps. While you're doing that it also becomes clear what you're doing I think.
I even have it working on a 4 year old windows 8 tablet (including ISTA-D and ISTA-P). Works like a treat, especially since the interfaces were designed for touch screen.

Reporting back on the mystery code. I got the Creator scanner (thanks for the suggestion, StickMon), hooked it up and it found a 2CFB (throttle valve adaptation value) code. This was the only fault code found. The code was cleared and the car was taken for a drive. Scanned again with both Carly and the Creator and neither shows any fault codes now. I'll keep monitoring and let y'all know if this code pops up again.
