At 71,000 miles, you need to pay out of your pocket every 15,000 miles for valve inspection/adjustment. Each adjustment can cost as much as $2,000 because it is TIME CONSUMING. If you're not willing to turn your own wrench, you need to keep this cost in mind.

Also at 71,000 miles you are looking at the need to replace the waterpump and thermostat ($250). And when you get to 90,000 miles start saving for a new radiator ($800). When you get to about 120,000 miles you need to start thinking about replacing the clutch ($800), because either the frictional material or the throw-out bearing will go soon.

Factor in these mileage milestones into your driving habit and the current mileage and figure out if it's smart to own an M car out of warranty.

Thanks for the advice in this thread - I appreciate it.

I've actually moved on from that car and am looking at a CPO'd M roadster with 18k miles on it for 30k.

Is this really true of the s54? Shouldn't this be done every 50k or so?

No. 30k. They're done at Inspection I and II, and Inspection II + adjustment (if needed) is about $1400. That's if the car is out of warranty.

You're right, anywhere from 20-30K miles. My inspection 1 came up at 22,000 miles. Don't know what came over me when I quoted 15,000 miles.

I just had the valve adjustment done on my Z4MC at 22, 800. The indicator said I had another 2500 miles to go.
