Center Console Light ON

Hey Guys, Have a quick question! Does the Light inside the Center Console (where the DVD Drive Unit located) supposed to stay ON all the time? I just noticed it stay ON everytime i have the Key in either ACC or actual ON (Driving). I saw someone mentioned there are some kind of defective on the latch/switch which might cause this (and might have some negative affects on the Battery). Thanks in Advance

Nope, it is supposed to shut off when the door is shut. The switch assembly/mechanism is not very German

Pop off the console door by removing the two phillips head screws and then releasing the console door from the hinges by pushing on the console door itself.

You can pop the trim piece that covers the switch off with a screwdriver and investigate from there. It probably just needs a small adustment.

Thank You for the advice! I will take a look at that tonight (the car is still under warranty so i might even bring it in since there are a few rattles/clunking which i am not sure if they are normal). Btw, i only had the car for 3 weeks and already put over 2k miles

My guess is the tab at the bottom of the door broke off. It is a very slender, delicate piece of plastic about 1cm long which extends from the bottom edge of the door to contact the switch. If you don't know it is there, very easy to break it off. You might as well get a new door through warranty.

Do you mean the door to the center console or the door of the car? If the former, how do you tell that it's on if you can't see the light when the door is closed?

I can hear my DVD unit spin up every time I open the door to the car. Is that normal?

I believe he meant the door on the center console! There are gaps between the door and the panels. Yes, you could see the light thru it. I first saw it ON during night time driving (and thought it was wired to the light switch) but confirmed today that it is still ON even when the switch is OFF (daytime driving). Anyhow, the reason i am concerned because i read somewhere it might related to the battery fails prematurely. Surely, my service records show the battery was replaced prior to me buying the car (cause "permenant battery failure"). I will definitely take it in and have the dealer take a look since it is still under warranty.

Thank You for all the inputs so far guys! Definitely something very strange going on with that switch. I was testing a few things last night and notice that the Console Light turn OFF inmediately after i LOCKED the car but it will stay ON if the car is UNLOCK (i waited a good 5 minutes and it was still ON. Definitely will try to bring it in to get it taken care off. Thanks

Hey guys, cant someone confirms that the light turn off when you close the console door. Mine stas ON all the time: open car doors, put key in ignition, while i am driving, even when i park the car put leave it unlock. The only time the light turn OFF is when i lock the car.
Since it is still under warranty, i am bring it in next week. By the way, my battery was replaced at 18975 miles for permenant damaged (now at 21356 miles)

i can confirm that it goes off, when i checked mine i noticed that it wasnt the plastic black clip that was broken but the cilver metal clip that it makes contact with was pushed over. i pushed it back with a screwdriver, problem solved. whenever i close the center console, my light turns off.

It's a common issue and the light should remain off when the door is closed. You'll end up having to get another battery if you don't get the issue corrected soon. Ask me how I know.

I'd keep the car plugged up to a trickle charger just to offset the drain on the battery. Yes, the light turns off after a few minutes but it still isn't good for it.

I checked but could not find anything. Since the car is still under warranty, i am bringing it in for them to check it out monday. By the way, the battery was replaced on 7/20/2010 (at 18,946 miles) due to permanent failure. Definitely dont want that to happen again ( could be related?)
By the way, where did you guys make the connection for the battery tender? At the battery's terminals? Or can it be done via the 12v outlet? Thanks

I had the same issue where the light would stay on. There should be a little plastic tab on the oddments door. The tab turns off the the light switch when the door is closed. Mine broke off. I tried gluing it back with a plastic epoxy. It worked for a while but then if broke off again. The dealer replaced the door. (Poor BMW design!)
