As a weekend/2nd car I don't have any interest in switching.

With this comparison, one can be purchased for at most $40k and the other is close to $70k and five years from now they are likely to have equal value? Huge difference in costs even if I liked the new one better.

The ZupraŽ is hideously ugly to my eye, and the styling is not likely to age well. Meanwhile, the E86 ages like Raquel Welch. And will only go up in value from here forward, while the Zupra will drop like a rock. HARD PASS!

Hate the new Z4. Actually kind of hate new BMWs in general. They've really lost what made them special in their quest for market share and insane model differentiation.

Z4MC is still one of the best looking cars from the past 20 years IMHO.

Only hope for this car is a full-on M coupe version with a manual. Which is not going to happen.

Saw a few of these at the dealer yesterday, wish I had time to give it a spin. I doubt anyone is cross shopping the E85/E86 platform and the new Z to be honest. Our local BMWCCA is full of Sunday roadster cruise n shine enthusiasts and they will always go purchase the latest Z.

Given its underpinnings, it should be a decently fun car - lamenting the absence of MT like most here.

It was actually the 197hp 2.0T - not the 382hp 3.0 T. Kind of hard to compare the old Z4M to a base version of the new car with an auto tranny.

At a whopping $88K in Canada for an M40i, these will sit on Canadian lots for a very long time. I expect that any that do appear on the streets up here will be leased for the most part. At Canadian prices, there is no way I could be so financially irresponsible to justify taking on what would amount to a heavy mortgage payment to replace my mint condition low mileage 3.0si with a new G29. To be quite honest, I find the Canadian Z4 prices to be offensive and rather insulting.

And with taxes, the car comes to NINETY-NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Did I see Dr. Evil sneaking into the BMW Pricing Dept. the other day? Thow me a frickin' bone....

I think it was great to get Andy's opinion on the new Zed but felt like it was a semi wasted opportunity. Agree it should have been the m40i, but in the video before the comparison to the Z4M he showed how it compared to his E89 20i. Would have been nice to partner with itsjoelw who has an e85.

As far as content goes it mostly pointed out the obvious, new technology, talking only a little about driving dynamics and comfort of the new chassis.

I don't want one but don't blame someone for buying it. It is likely fast, comfortable, reliable and easy to daily drive without a lot of hassles owning a 13 year old car comes with.

True.

But if I value my car at $20k Canadian, I can put up with an awful lot of hassle before buying a $99k replacement.

I actually recently ended up in a situation where I was cross shopping between the Z4 M and the Z4 M40i

Dealership offered a very convenient deal on the M40i but ultimately settled on the Z4 M after a few test drives

Z4 M40i is a great car but like with all tbe new BMWs the driving experience feels very artificial. It handles well, is very fast and has an amazing interior but it just is not that engaging. It's also quite big in size and more of a GT than a sports car.

I'll be crucified for this, but if anything, I feel like the 'hairdresser' stereotype is much more pronounced on the new Z4 line. It's like a posh and sturdy little missile you and your bestie girlfriend ride together in when going to the mall.

Z4 M whether coupe or roadster will always be 'special' both due to limited production and characteristics (NA, Hydraulic steering etc.). Z4 M40i in 5-6 years time will just be another BMW and I really can't see it holding much value. I also feel like the Supra partnership will be another big factor that devalues the car in time. It's a great car, I'm not saying it's bad, but it has nothing really special going for it to become iconic in the long-run. Arguably, I also believe a Z4 M in decent condition and with decent mileage will in 5-10 years time be worth much much more than the M40i.
