Thanks guys, it was a pleasure meeting the few that I did meet. The weather wasn't exactly the best and I was hosting my own group so I didn't get a chance to introduce myself to most. But however I did pass many of you on my session in the yellow z06

What an amazing track! I'll post a video later but my best time in the 2nd session was a 2:01

Kinda bummed I couldn't make it out yesterday. Sounds like it was still a lot of fun despite the rain.

I'm almost positive I'm going to sign up for Feb 18th (since it's a holiday). Last time it rained at Seca on that day was in 2009

2-18? Tempting, very tempting!

Mike, you mean you don't always dress like that in the rain?

Weather forecast 50% means Mike puts on only 50% clothing

Damn, if we can get more people, I might be down for Feb. 18th O_O

I'm in for both 1/21 & 2/18, rain or shine.

Prefer shine with 0% precipitation. I wonder what mike is going to wear

My first quarter is looking like 2/18 Laguna, and 3/2 Thunderhill.

Got to do Thunderhill.

Also need to do a Button Willow event!

Might do that schedule too, but probably not Button Willow. But if there's any chance of rain I'm putting the Sumitomos, on stock wheels stock sizes on the car. The NT05s were like driving on ice.

On the highway back to the hotel Krissi (PSSs) took the hell off on me leaving me unable to keep up (I was hydroplaning everywhere). She said later she was perfectly planted.

Drove Thill twice in similar conditions on Star Specs and the pucker factor was many times lower. Think Lon was on the same tires though--mine have 500 miles so molding should be gone. so

500 miles should be plenty :/
What pressures were you running? I was running like 35psi all around cold, pretty high, since I felt like the tires wouldn't warm up too much in those kinds of conditions.
With DSC on, I could still run a decent pace. Mike got an unlucky first session out with me, in which I mistaknely used my typical DSC-off SORRY MIKE! Didn't mean to scare you
I was surprised myself, at how difficult it was to drive at track speeds in the wet with DSC off. I typically drive DSC-off 24/7 on the street and have no problems lol. Go figure.

Hmm. 33 cold, maybe should have run more pressure like 35 or even 37.

But driving in wet with the Star Specs on the track wasn't anything like this, and I was running the same size tires same pressures. Maybe 500 easy miles isn't enough, not enough scuffing, not enough hard braking on dry asphalt to really break in the tires.

IDK, just going to throw on the Sumis, since they're pretty solid in the rain.

haha yeah, no worries. NT05s weren't really made for the rain anyhow. The treading is almost flat lol, barely has any grooves to evacuate hard standing water
They're AWESOME in the dry though. It's the only good and affordable performance tire in the 19" segment, so I've been running it for quite some time now
Maybe break them in a bit more and try driving with DSC off on the street during rainy days. I think maybe it's due to the fact that I drive with DSC off all the time that I got used to them?
I didn't particularly have any issues with turn-in (or out for that matter) on Sunday; only issues with putting power down IF DSC was off. But with DSC on, it was go time
I almost kept up with the champagne 2.8 Z4 in my run group. The driver used to do NASA Spec Miata races and won a couple of events as far as I know. He would slowly pull away, but I think with half a day or a day's worth of more seat time in the rain, I should be able to keep up even better

Must be tire break in. Because even with very gentle and smooth turn in it was skatin' time! With DSC on I was just barely touching the throttle and the back end got very loose. Not "good" loose under control, bad unpredictable looseness--like WTF I'm brushing the throttle with my pinkie toe looseness.

But I did learn to be super smooth as anything less resulted in zero control. That should carry over nicely to dry driving--and it's been my goal to improve on that this year. So it's all good, and we were there to learn.

Sounds like you had some really good sessions! Way to represent the Zpost!

Ditto

If you look at the tread, there is really no exit for the water. But there pretty good on a dry day

I've tracked in the wet before, but not in the pouring rain conditions that we had on Sunday. And I found throughout the day that with DSC on in the extreme wet, even on the NT05s, the car can actually take LOTs of throttle input. In other words, the car will feel unsettling, but that's really just the DSC kicking in, trying to accommodate for any differences in wheel speed in the four corners. However, the system (as I found out myself just on Sunday) is quite proficient, and allows us to get on the gas much earlier than we think or would otherwise normally feel comfortable doing. So perhaps what you felt was the DSC kicking in, as opposed to tires giving out? Since, I doubt there could be THAT much difference between our rubber
It's an odd feeling as you transition from throttle-on, and the DSC taking over, then everything settling again. But as I found, we could force DSC to help settle the car by actually applying the throttle (not necessarily mashing it, but just adding at a significant speed/amount). Just what I felt/experienced
Which is why I kind of wanted another couple of sessions or so. I wanted to really test out my theory (even moreso than what I was already doing throughout the day). Those that rode along with me in the passenger seat could feel the DSC kick in, and it makes you want to correct the car. However, as I mentioned above, I really think we just have to trust the DSC system and keep pedaling on

Just out of curiosity, do the Z4M's have a 2-stage traction control? I only turned off the DSC, but kept the DTC on. This allowed some slip, and the computer wouldn't cut throttle too soon.

Anyway, I didn't get a chance to meet anyone except Mark (not sure if you're on here), but I was in the white E92 335i. I put together couple videos from Laguna Seca.

Highlight video:

My quickest lap of that day:

As far as I know, the Z4Ms do not have dual-stage DSC. One touch of the button and driver is at full control. Hence why I was fishtailing all over the place during my first session out. No bueno lolol

edit: just saw your hot-lap vid. Nice drivin'

Yeah, I think I'm going to copy this schedule...keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get any work trips scheduled at the last minute!

Looks like I spoke too early. Wife tells me we are out of the country for vacation starting that weekend 2/18.

Looking between Track Masters and NCRC for another possible february date... HOD is too $$ for me.

If anyone sees a good Sonoma weekend date, please let me know.

Also maybe we start a separate thread for 2013 tracks days... I'll do that.
