I bet you've never seen a Z4 top like mine

It sat in direct sunlight for a year, 24/7. Then it was vandalized with what seems like a knife in the passenger side. As for the driver's side near the window, that just happened when I pulled the top up, must've gotten stuck somewhere when it was down.

Perhaps a little convertible top cleaner and it's all good ):

Unsure what caused the tearing above the driver's door - could it be related to the top's frame not pivoting correctly?

There are places out there that can work wonders with things like this, but that looks like a tough one to have repaired. But you never know until you ask.

LOL. I've inquired with a few places, but most people just make this face expression like "i'll be glad to take your money but more than likely you're not going to be satisfied with the results". The top seems to be burned, the cuts were the final straw to help me decide to just replace it. I also need the top motor replaced; it only latches/unlatches but doesn't actually move the top up or down. Once I have the motor and top, I'll move the motor to the trunk and replace the top at the same time.

Does anyone know if the top is sold with the inside plastic trim you see when you look up from inside the cabin?

I had a 2000 S2000 which I bought new in September 1999 and kept for 13 years before I bought the Z4 M Roadster in August 2012. In 2009, when it was about 10 years old, after much patching with black duct tape, I got the top replaced. I found the best auto upholstery shop in San Diego, highly recommended, and they also did convertible tops. They did an excellent job and charged around $1100-1200. Some neighbors bought the S2000 for their 22 year old son as a graduation gift and the last time I saw it it still looked good. (He first saw it when he was 11 and had apparently told his parents that it was his dream car!)

You might want to ask local BMW CCA members where they have their tops and upholstery done.

(BTW, when I had the S2000 top replaced it looked way better than the OP's top!)

Thanks I am leaning towards Robbins or GAHH, but wrestling with whether to tackle myself or have shop do it. I’ve seen the write up on how to the top assembly but replacing the fabric seems like a mf’er of a job.

It's a pretty tedious job. I'd guesstimate total time on replacing the canvas and headliner when I did it was about 30 hours or so of work.......

Keep in mind I was taking photos as I was taking it apart to ensure I could put it back together (also with the intent of doing a DIY , I was being very deliberate, and I'm including modifying the pop rivet tool so it would fit into the valley of the top bracket for the side pieces that hold the headliner to the top frame. That's also including fabricating the holding stand to support the top while I worked on it. It's not some much difficult as it is tedious. Like most things on the Z4 there's a cazillion different fasteners so you're constantly changing bits or sockets.

Stupid question but aftermarket top replacements are just the fabric only? It’s not a complete assembly with frame, correct?

My understanding is that it’s just the fabric, along with the rear window. I was thinking of following Shipkiller’s DIY guide, I know many have done it so it can’t be that difficult to do, just takes time as said above.

Yep! Just the fabric with the glass window bonded in. In addition to buying the top, you need to buy the top replacement hardware kit, and headliner replacement hardware kit, so you might as well do the headliner while you're at it.

Man this sounds like a lot of work and tools needed! I guess I'm going to be needing those kits, I thought this was more of a "plug and play" DIY.

On another note, can anyone photoshop a black Z4 with a red convertible top? Specifically the red that BMW makes for tops. Thanks in advance!

Where were you that you had direct sunlight 24/7/365?!? I thought Vegas was the only city that never sleeps.

This is one of the many benefits of having a coupe!

LOL was definitely not in Vegas. Deep south Texas, where temperature sometimes reaches 110 degrees. I had my car at my local BMW dealership. They were "repairing" it but ended up doing more damage by piercing a hole in the front bumper when they were backing up another car, broke the headlight, tore up my steering wheel. They admitted all this, refused to pay though as it was an old BMW. Took legal action, settled. Meanwhile, they had the car outside parked for about a year. I WISH I had a coupe. Thanks for the pic by the way.

Can anyone photoshop that silver Z4 and make it black? pretty please? anyone?

I think a medium brown or sand / tan color would be a great canvas top choice on a black Z4.

By the way, I am betting that a shop that repairs yacht sails could do a temporary repair of the top that may be a reasonable interim solution for you.

So my birthday is coming up 10/05 and my lovely girlfriend is buying me a new top for the car. She decided to tell me as she has no clue where to buy it. In all honesty, I'm not sure either. Browsing through eBay, there's different options for the Z4. Mine is a 2006 (manufactured 03/06). I decided I can't go wrong with a black top as my car is black. As for the types of top (stayfast, twillfast RPC cloth, Haartz), what brand or material should I go for? Any advice is appreciated! I found this one below, good choice?

So I'm choosing to go with the Haartz Twillfast RPC BLACK top.

DC Wright, you mentioned we need the "top replacement hardware kit" and the "headliner replacement hardware kit". Is the headliner replacement kit necessary if we're using the same headliner. Mine seems to be in good condition still.
