Pink-eye is the standard failure mode for the bulbs.
If you replace the bulb, you should do both so they're the same color temp.
It could have been pink-eye. I just noticed it reflecting on the wall of my parking garage when I pulled in to work. I didn't have a chance to get out my color wheel.

You think just the bulbs need to be replaced but not the ballast? I'm finding conflicting notes about whether the low and high beams are separate bulbs for my car. Neither low nor high beam works for me currently, so that's why I thought it might be the ballast. Amazon says the D2S bulb linked earlier in this thread "Fits Low Beam Headlight Only".

NOT separate high/low beams - single bulb.

If you're not sure it's the ballast or the bulb, try switching the drivers and passenger side bulbs back and forth. If the 'bulb out' issue moves with the bulb, the bulb is the problem. If the problem stays on one side or the other, it's the ballast (or possibly maybe the controller unit mounted on the bottom of the headlight housing).

Hi/low used the same bulb, a shutter inside the project allows light to shine up for the high beam. As I said in a previous post years ago, there are a ton of counterfeit bulbs out there.

I've been converting Z4 headlights to duel bright angle eyes for years and have seen these counterfeit bulbs burn/brown the projector chrome which dramatically reduces the light output of the headlight.

Many of the counterfeit Chinese bulbs don't have the the UV protection to prevent headlight damage. Sure the counterfeit work, but I would not use them in my headlights. But, by all means, buy some bulbs from the Amazon link, maybe they're real maybe they're fake. At least you should know how to tell the difference.
