BMW 2006 Z4M OEM Ipod interface & Iphone4

Greetings to the forum,

I have a 2006 Z4 M Roadster and had the OEM BMW Ipod interface installed a little while ago.

The good news is that it works just fine with my Ipod and other than the limitation of the 6 prenamed playlists I have no complaints.

The bad news is that I am going to be receiving an Iphone 4 16 gig unit for my birthday (this is bad news????) and I am worried now will I be able to connect the Iphone 4 to the cable that fits the Ipod? Have I outfoxed myself here?

Can anyone shed any light on what the options are here?

Thanks in advance and regards..............................

The OEM interface works great with the iPhone 4. You will need a charge converter for the cable to adapt the OEM interface to USB charging. Something like this was included with the SpecDock mount I installed. http://indashpc.org/new/accessories/charger-3gcr.html

Since the iPhone 4 is a little more than just an iPod, you can use that to your advantage. You can create and modify playlists on the iPhone so you can change what's in those five playlists whenever you wish and the car recognizes them. Another trick I discovered is that when you are playing music from your iPhone, you can hit the home button and launch another application such as Pandora and start streaming Internet radio through your radio. It's better than Sirius. The radio is none the wiser and just thinks it's still playing whatever track was playing when you ran the other app. This is where the SpecDock comes in handy as it puts the phone at your fingertips so you can quickly and easily control the apps.

Bluetooth also works well and the tracks are paused when a call comes in.

A quick update to using the iphone 4 with the OEM iPod interface. With the release of IOS5, or an update to Pandora, I've noticed that the NAV display now shows the track information for the currently playing track from Pandora and not whatever song was playing in the playlist before you switched over to Pandora.

Anyone know the part number for the OEM ipod unit? I might just need the cable for it.

I believe they've been through at least a couple of versions of the OEM ipod adapter. The one I have (came with my 2006 Z4) contains these parts:

Interface Box: 65 11 0 392 130 HW: 2.0 SW: 2.1
Ipod Connection Cable: 65 11 0 392 132

The radio interface harness for this has no separate BMW part number on the label - it may be considered part of the interface box.

I also have retrofit installation instructions dated 09/2005 (printed from the internet), which show this kit number: 65 41 0 409 610 (Retrofit Kit iPod Interface). Compatibility is listed as:

X3 (E83), X5(E53), Z4(E85) and 5 Series (E39).

Edit: Found these additional numbers by googling the Retrofit kit number - I suspect this is the later version of the kit (added 5V charging)?

Part number: 65 41 0 409 610
Old part number: 65 41 0 395 292

Part number Name Supplement Quantity

01 29 0 017 969 Stick-on label EBA-AUFKL. GELB 1
01 29 0 395 294 Operating instructions IPOD-ANSCHL BMW 1
65 11 0 035 957 Cable BLACK IPOD I/F 1
65 11 0 035 962 Module IPOD I/F G3 US 1
65 11 0 411 924 Adapter lead 1
01 29 0 412 605 Installation instructions 1

I found my adapter, and pulled the same part numbers as you did (first ones listed)

Apparently thats not made anymore. Can't find 65 41 0 409 610 either, but did find those individual parts you listed. It seems like the Adapter lead and the cable are both..well...cables. Except the adapter lead is a lot more expensive. Do you know which pieces I need to replace my old kit?

Wait, What?

I have an iPhone 4, iOS5, and NAV with the premium audio system on my 07, and I don't get anything displayed anywhere except BMW1, BMW2, etc. Does this only work with Pandora, or the native iPhone app?

I've found that it works with any of my audio iPhone apps. I usually just select the BMW1 playlist via the radio controls, and after it starts I then go to my phone and start Pandora, or Audible, or the new Podcast app, and it takes over from the "ipod" and starts piping it's audio through the car's iPod interface.

The BMW1 playlist information sometimes lingers on the NAV display until a new track is started via Pandora or Podcast app, and then it updates with that information.
