X10116: where to locate in Z4M

I took almost the entire day today (Saturday) to look for this “connection block” AKA X10116 in my Z4M (prod. Date 03/06) and have had no luck. Dave found his in back of the dash of the passenger footwell attached to the firewall. My car doesn’t have a connection block there. It’s gotta be located elsewhere but for the life of me, I cannot find it. I took advantage of my day off to replace the driver’s window regulator, replace my battery with a new one since it was under warranty. I also removed the GM5 since I was already down there and cleaned the wires and connections with the CRC QD electronic cleaner. Also removed the battery tray as well as the connections to its right side which seems like a module, sprayed some CRC on all those connections and module as well. Behind the carpet in that location, I found this “connection block” like... thingy.. anyone know what it is? Here’s a few pictures of where the X10116 (connection block) would be on a non M Z4 (footwell attached to firewall) and also a few pictures of the connections by the battery that seem like a connection block. Any help is much appreciated.

According to that link, that's where it's supposed to be but I've taken about 3 days gutting everything out and I don't see it anywhere.

You seem to be searching for it at the carpet area. Tried looking upwards from the footwell into the bottom of the dashboard area?

I did. I removed everything I could. Looking up from down under all I could see was the carpeted top and the AC system/vents

Ross,
A cluster of small light brown wires would be a tip off.
I see nothing like that in your photos.

Agreed, Dave. I was tired and took crappy pictures but that's actually what I was looking for, couldn't find any wires anywhere other than what's shown in the pics.

Thats a mystery why the OEM wouldn't put that in the same place for both models.
Have you reached out to the 2 guys I suggested?

Just did, I wanted to give it a go myself first so I could at least more or less know what I’m talking about lol

Negative. Those purple box things are relays. In the non M Z4, the X10116 is attached to those relays. In the M, there’s no grounding block attached to the relays.

I would check the TIS / WDS and see what plugs into it. Find said wire, follow it.

I determined that I’m a total idiot or BMW just didn’t place the X10116 on the passenger side in my car. Perhaps the location changed by production date. Mine is a 03/2006. I jumper over to the driver side’s footwell and found two ground blocks that have brown wires, not the yellow/white/red wires I’m looking for. My guess is there’s ground blocks all around the vehicle, but does anyone know what these two are for? One of the ground blocks has the EWS module running to it. Isn’t that a module running through the K bus? Check out the pictures below. Also included, there’s a picture showing the passenger side where there seems to be two studs where ground blocks could have been placed before, maybe my car has been messed with in the past.

FWIW you won't find any of those grounding blocks with yellow / red / white wires. If you're looking for the K-bus, you are not looking for the ground blocks. Here's some information about X10116 (which is a bus / connection, not a connector): https://www.bmwgm5.com/E46_K-Bus.htm

And some more:
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...16-no-adapter/

Note that the K-bus block appears to be integrated with the fuse / power distribution panel. Looks for a bunch of ~20ga white with red / yellow wires going to a common location and you will have located your K-bus junction.

If you're not looking for the K-bus junction, what are you looking for? Maybe I'm missing some context.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for, the K bus junction. I pulled apart the fuse box, still no go. I removed the knee air bag, do I need to remove the bigger airbag up top right behind the dash?

I undid a bundle of wires and removed the tape, this is what I found; yellow/red/white wires. There is NO connection block though. Could it be that the “K bus junction” was just taped up?

Thanks Dave, if I can’t figure it out by Saturday, I’m giving up and taking it to the dealer

There is no connector X10116.
If you look at the diagram, there is no connector drawn, just the wire.
Thats why there's also no connector view to see what the connector looks like and what the pinout is.
A connector in the diagrams is drawn like a cup with a small pin in it.
X10116 only shows a dot, which is a solid connection, so its just the wire.

This is the complete diagram:

A connector for instance here is x300 or x322. they are drawn as a cup with pin.
In WDS you can click those and it'll show location, pinout etc.

I dont know why x10116 is mentioned as if it were a connector.
Maybe because it has many branches or that its an important wire (system bus)

But if you've found that white red yellow wire on that spot, its probably the k bus

WDS isn't the most easy tool to use.
Its very methodical and logical, but in a german kind of way

That makes sense GuidoK. Thanks for shedding some light. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this anymore without that block. I'll pass on the car to the "professionals" now.

It’s 5:15am here, spent another Saturday trying to figure it out. I’m tired. I’m upset. I’m sleepy. Im disappointed. I’m starving. I’m hopeless. I assembled all the pieces back on the passenger and drive side’s footwell. Now my windows aren’t rolling up/down and my wipers aren’t functioning either. Perhaps the GM5, but my central locking button does work fine. I sent my GM5 to Scott about a year ago and he gave me my money back, said the module was OK. I’ll be taking the car to the dealer hopefully on Monday to get the occupancy mat sensor replaced but I don’t feel comfortable taking it in with the windows almost all the way down and not being able to come up. I think I’m done with this car. I may settle for an E89. I don’t drink, but right I now I need a fkn beer

This sucks man.

You had the battery disconnected while you were messing around under the dash right?

If not disconnect the battery for an hour and check all fuses.
See what fault codes are present after reconnecting the battery.
