Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. These cars desperately need a screen upgrade solution.

I might drill a hole in the dash temporary to pass the wires in tempoary and cut it out in the spring. Just to test it and make sure it works..

I figure this will come around thanksgiving / xmas time.. lol

I do want to mount it lower so you dont see the base of it too much. I have a 3d printer here so I can do a custom support from the bottom up. Ill have to see when it gets here.

Unit is shipped.. thought it was going to take a month.. its coming by thanksgiving via UPS

i will probably just drill a mounting hole to temporary mount it in place. Cut the dash in march when it gets warmer.. its already freezing now.

But I will give it a good test to make sure everything works.

I keep thinking Thanksgiving is this week, its next.. this thing is coming 22th. Fast from china.. I guess custom pending.. that can hold it up.

I been parsing through the f30 forum with this, boy do they have tons of issues.. mostly with signaling problem. The more options your car comes with, the more issues.. luckily mine came with nothing.. lol.

Just got here.. can't wait to test hook it up. The cut area looks a lot smaller than other cars. I notice they have different size bases depending on car.. the original x3 base looks a lot bigger and longer than the z4 base.

I did parse through hundreds of threads in the f30 on these android navigation. Most were from last year with android 7.1 - 8.0, those seem to be extremely buggy. The more electronics (features) you have in your car, the higher chance of incompatibility you will get. ie models with gps, bt, different connectors. For my e85, I have like nothing.. lol wish me luck

Also the seller put 15 dollars on the custom form. I had a guy at work look at the chinese words... i didn't pay any tax, unless ups sends a bill ?

I just plug it in to test it out.. it is definitely fast. I'm use to the response time of ipad and ipad pro. This isn't that far behind, fast enough. I'm not going to fully install it for another week or two or maybe month, busy at work.. easy plug and play. There is a lot of cables, hope I can hide it all.. lol.. I haven't hook up anything else, rear camera, dash, front camera. I'm doing this in late at night with a spot light

If you are getting this, get the newer android and max memory & cores.
Android needs decent memory, I got the 4gb one.. more better. older units crashes or has android issues. the 8 core one would be better but they claim its not supported for z4. I'm going to look to add the external mic and i got a 256gb sd card to see if its supported..

- Forgot which fast & furious demo..

Boot up time, I was using wifi from my driveway

The only reason I really wanted this. Running waze and not off my phone. Screen is good and sharp, Ill need to test it in the day time. Did not hook up audio

At first i was like wtf, it doesn't download map. turns out I didn't plug in the gps antenna.. once I did it found my location fast

Looks very promising.

Avin's Z4 specific model, according them, should fit flush with our dash's.

I didn't order from them because of lots of complains over on the f30 forums, unit turning into brick from updates.. lots of support before buying but after you get your unit, they barely respond.

Seems like they have different bases.. the one I got looks shorter in the back

The avin one would cover the hole left behind by the old Nav unit. The one you are working with is for those cutting their dash.

I drove around with it zipped tie and audio hook up today. Overall its pretty good.

-Movie sound test was good enough for me. Pretty clear but I just really want to use this for waze while driving.
-Waze sound only comes out driver side speaker, a little low - volume control does not work on this (steering wheel)
-Volume control works on steering wheel for music/movie audio
-Android has different volume control ie media, alerts, etc, etc. they can be individually set, so the steering wheel may be tied to one of the volume control.
-Unit dim when headlight is on.. one of the complains from older version
-The cables are long, too many lol

instead of the usb cable they gave me, im going to swap it out to one of these dual usb and mount it below the climate control where the aux panel was.

Its so easy to install. Do you have oem navigation ? if not its easier because you dont have an existing hole to cover up.

I will post more pics when I start cutting up the dash.

So useful.. i can't live without waze.. lol i dont need to watch movie or listen to music.. i just need waze.

Any update on the Avin Z4 specific model

I recently bought a 2008 coupe. The stock Nav has to go.
Waiting for the final results on the Ali system install.

I understand the Avin support is crap so that is a concern.
But, the picture posted here looks like the fit is good.

There is nothing on the website. Where did you get this picture?
Still trying to get answers from Avin. Thanks. Gordon

That does not look like a Z4 E85/E86 dashboard to me. Have they sent you a picture of a 1 Series or X3?

On the first msg, they say you order the one for x3 and fit it into the z4 dash. Thats why it looks different. Assuming the x3 and z4 has similar dash with the navigation unit/hole (from the chat).
If you have factory nav, I would suggest ordering from Avin assuming those return policy are still valid. You do not want to ship this back to china if they send the wrong unit, it was decently hard to communicate with them. Or if you have an Asian friend that can write back in Chinese, then you are golden

A few people had ask me for the dimensions of the template I was given for non factory gps unit, here are the screen shot measurements.. let me know if you guys need more info on this or additional measurement.

Did you have to modify the base of the nav?

Also how is the visibility with the new screen. I am 5'10" so im curious if you find that it obstructs your view.

I havent fully install it yet.. i got it before thanksgiving and went away.. i'm working next 3 weeks doing year end closures, so i wont even have time till xmas/new years to start cutting. I hope its not too cold when i'm trying to install it. I only temporary hooked it up to make sure it boots up, etc.

I just help my friend install his.. he got a x3 version. did not want to drill another hole for gps, so the wire is coming out of the back of the gps unit on the dash.. simple install as well.
