Opening a door for a woman is like saying let me see that ass first.

Always. Car doors or building doors...its just polite. I was raised by southerners and I was taught that was the only acceptable practice.

Correct, but the thread is about opening car doors.

Considering the last few posts it seems to have expanded to other doors as well.

Does that make it off topic? Not really, IMO.

This isn't very wise in my opinion. For one, like someone said you're forcing them to play your games. But more importantly, this poses a possible escalation because you're not satisfied with the response you get from holding a door. You went from 0 to 100 really quick my friend, and good luck with expecting a certain outcome from every single person you hold the door for. You're simply creating more stress and drama for the sake of what exactly? I personally, would thank the person holding the door but at the same time i didn't ask that person to hold the door for me did I? What if i find it offensive, what if i want to go at my own pace instead of "hurrying" up my walk to save you time, what if im so consumed in something else i forget to say thank you once? Now i have some D bag trying to "teach me a lesson" and tell me how to live my life when all i wanted to do was get in and out and on my merry way. These thoughts should be considered.

Never open the car door for my wife though and should would def not want me to. It's an antiquated gesture and a little awkward.
Same deal for me, i personally am not a door holder for my woman, and luckily she's not into that herself. Its just not something that matters to her as she can "open the door herself" as she says.
When it comes to people behind me walking into a building that's a different story, although im not going to sit there and wait 10 seconds for you to get to me, ive experienced this before and it creates such an obligation it makes me feel like telling them to just go ahead, ill be there don't worry.

It's not needed but if someone takes the time to do the courtesy I am thrilled. It's a nice gesture.

Am I the only guy on planet Earth who has been chewed out for perpetuating the stereotype that women are weaker than men by merely *reaching* for a door handle?????

This has happened to me a few times. I was trying to be chivalrous... :
